Recap / SWATS 02 E 02 Gasoline Drum

Go To

When Street and his partner request S.W.A.T's assistance at a suburban shoot out, it ends with Street looking after a terrified girl and her mother and brother on the run. When a colleague of Cortez's from Interpol informs her they are the estranged family of a Turkish criminal boss determined to get his kids back, the race is on to find the family before he does.

Tropes:

  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: The main villain may be a ruthless Turkish mob boss with no compunction about killing women and his men when they screw up, but it's clear he loves his children, since he's willing to let a vengeful woman shoot him in exchange for her sparing his son's life.
  • Expert Consultant: Initially, Chris and Street are having some difficulties making sense of where the mob boss's daughter says her mother was taking them, until Deacon deduces from what she's saying the girl is referring to somewhere with horses. When they ask how he knew, Deacon replies they just need someone who knows "how to speak seven year old girl": the parts of what the girl was saying Chris and Street didn't understand were the names of My Little Pony characters.
  • Friend to All Children: Street is shown to be surprisingly good with the woman's daughter.
  • Kill It with Fire: The episode's title refers to the villain's method of dealing with informants and rivals: namely burning them alive and stuffing their remains in gasoline drums.
  • Mama Bear: The episode centres around the ex-wife of a Turkish crime lord trying to get her children away from their father's dangerous life.
  • My Greatest Failure: After rescuing the mother and son from her husband's mercenaries, the former is distraught about having left her daughter behind, relieved the girl is safe at S.W.A.T headquarters, and afraid her daughter will never forgive her for leaving her behind.
  • Prodigal Family: A Turkish mother and her children react to the news that the father, a mafia boss, wants to reunite with them by rushing across the city to escape him.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: It turns out Cortez's old friend from Interpol is running a one-woman crusade to get back at the man who murdered her sister as a warning to back off from investigating him.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Cortez's old partner is more than willing to murder a little boy to force his father into a confrontation.
