Recap / SMG4 - The Game Cube

Go To

SMG4 and Mario wake up TRAPPED inside a Cube and gotta find a way out.

Mario and SMG4 are trapped inside a mysterious, giant cube, and the only way out is completing a series of Death Games.

Tropes:

  • Aside Glance: Mario does this, as much as he can with his Fish Eyes, in Game 4 while SMG4 is humorously trying to pull him up and drop him into the can.
  • Bait-and-Switch: During Toad-in-the-Box, Mario fails and summons Bowser. He tries to reference their friendship to avoid punishment, to which Bowser pats him on the head… and then blasts him with fire.
  • Bottle Episode: Cameos aside, this episode features only Mario and SMG4 until the ending. Plus, the entire episode takes place in a single room.
  • Call-Back: SMG4 during Crane Game wonders why the timer is still going after he put all the random crap in the bin. Then he realizes he's required to lift Mario, who we are reminded is impossibly heavy (specifically, he weighs Infinity-minus-one kilograms). SMG4 tries and fails to lift him. As he does, Mario nonchalantly walks over and puts himself in the bin to win the game.
  • Cutting the Knot: Mario spends most of the Shy Guy Says minigame out cold with a cutlass in his face while the focus is on SMG4 attempting the challenge himself. Eventually Mario, sick of Shy Guy's trolling, gets up, pulls out the cutlass, and throws it back at Shy Guy, killing him and winning the game.
  • Death Game: Mario and SMG4 must complete lethal challenges from within the cube.
  • Foreshadowing: Two, which are connected.
    • All the challenges are strangely similar to Mario Party minigames.
    • The title itself is a double-reference. It's not only a shout-out to Cube but also the GameCube, which is what Mario and SMG4 were trapped in for the whole episode.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Mario gets sliced in half by a chain-chomp and then takes a pirate's shortsword (a cutlass) to the forehead without any of it fazing him.
  • The Reveal: The ending reveals that Mario and SMG4 were put into the cube by Shigeru Miyamoto, who was testing out his newest Mario Party, Mario Party VR.
  • Security Cling: During the countdown to their apparent deaths, Mario and SMG4 tearfully hold each other in terror.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Mario and SMG4 argue over who should handle Bowser's Big Blast but eventually give up and cower in the corner. Bowser-head soon gets fed up them being "the biggest babies [he's] ever seen in [his] entire life!", pulls out a gun, and shoots himself, handing Mario and SMG4 the win by default.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The inside of the titular cube is an exact replica of the one of the many cubic rooms from the movie Cube.
    • The four challenges that Mario and SMG4 have to do are simply mini-games taken from Mario Party 2, specifically TOAD in the Box, Bowser’s Big Blast, Shy Guy Says, and Crane Game.
    • When Mario is trying to find an excuse for why he shouldn't take part in Bowser's Big Blast, the music and set change to Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (Hungarian version for some reason).
    • The coin SMG4 flips to see who will take on Robo Bowser Head is yet another Team Fortress 2 asset – a half-dollar depicting town founder and coward Claude Huggins.
    • SMG4 goes through two forms of Super Saiyan in his attempt to lift Mario. He still fails.
