Recap / Rune Scape Mournings End Part 1

Go To

You remember how you promised to help Arianwyn and La RĂ©sistance against Lathas and Iorwerth? Well, now's the time. Arianwyn wants you to infiltrate the mourners, who are actually the Death Guard of elves serving under Lord Iorwerth. The Plague Doctor gear they wear isn't just for style, it hides their true species. You accomplish this by killing a Mourner on the Pass of Arandar and taking their stuff. After it's been cleaned and fixed up a bit, you disguise yourself in the outfit and go to the cellar of the Mourner Headquarters, where the Mourners' leader is. He buys your disguise hook, line, and sinker, and sets you some tasks to complete to help maintain the façade of West Adrougne being plague-stricken.

The first task is simple; re-dye those sheep from Sheep Herder. There's no plague, so obviously the sheep aren't actually sick. The mourners just dyed their wool to fool the farmer. They used a gnome device to shoot packets of dye at the sheep (because it would look kinda suspicious for the mourners to just go up to the sheep and pour dye on them), but they don't have any more packets and the device they used is broken. The gnome inventor isn't cooperating despite all the torture they've used (he played gnomeball as a kid; they can't do anything worse than that). You have to get it from him with Cool and Unusual Punishment- Tickle Torture and taunting him with his favorite food. You then make makeshift dye packets by bloating swamp toads with dye, and color some sheep.

The next task is to re-create the food poisoning you gave the Mourners back in Biohazard. Although they don't know it was you or how you did it, the symptoms were similar to those of the fake plague, and they need some more "plague victims", both because nobody's been catching the supposedly virulent and lethal plague for some time, and because they've been running short on slave labor lately. You enlist Elena (telling her everything about the quest series so far) to extract the toxin that affected the mourners (it's from a mold that grows on rotten apples), and poison some of the city's food depots.

Once this is done, the Head Mourner will be very happy with you and reveal what they needed all those slaves for- they discovered an ancient temple in the caverns under West Adrougne, which contains a source of powerful magic that could speed up the Dark Lord's return. Unfortunately, their slaves keep getting killed by the beasts in the caverns, so they need a steady supply, which the fake plague conveniently provides.

He has another task for you, but he can't give it to you yet because the locksmith isn't done copying the door key for you. Quest complete, but the tale of the Mourners is To Be Continued...

This quest contains the following tropes:

  • Call-Back: Plenty to previous quests in the Plague series.
    • The first task you're given is to use dye to fake sick sheep, like you killed in Sheep Herder.
    • The second task is to repeat what you did to the Mourners in Biohazard to the citizens of West Ardougne.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Lord Iorwerth and the Mourners are planning to betray Lathas after they have the mysterious power source under West Adrougne.
  • Hidden Elf Village: Lletya, base of the Rebel Elves.
  • Obviously Evil: Lampshaded by Elena, who wonders why on earth Lathas would ally with a being who openly calls himself the the Dark Lord.
  • You Just Told Me: The gnome prisoner will inadvertently reveal to you that the only thing that's going to work on him is Tickle Torture and tempting him with toad crunchies.
