Recap / Runaways (2017) S02E11: "Last Waltz"

Go To

The Runaways are falling apart. Needing a break, they throw Molly a quinceanera. PRIDE ramps up their new arsenal. Frank puts Leslie in a facility to bring her back to the faith. Meanwhile, the mysterious voice Karolina has been hearing becomes real.

  • Ambiguous Situation: Who is talking to Chase? The alien or Victor?
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: Susan gives Leslie a paper to sign away her consent to undergo reconditioning. As long as she doesn't do it, she is kept prisoner.
  • Badass Boast: Hilariously subverted. When Dale asks Alex "Exactly how experienced are you with that thing?" His response, "Not very." in a threatening tone gets Dale to back down.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Alex, Karolina and Molly bust out Chase and Gert. Sadly, Old Lace stays behind to get revenge on the Yorkes and gets tranquilized.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Susan.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: Chase leaves the Runaways to reunite with his family.
  • Church of Happyology: The reconditioning, the use of blackmailing and forced contracts are all practices that Scientology has been accused of practicing. The term "Aphotic Person" is the equivalent to "Suppressive Person".
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: Old Lace can seemingly smell the beings possessing Tina and Stacey
  • Foreshadowing: Chase repeatedly making excuses to the parents hints towards him leaving to return to his family.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Stacey (or whoever is possessing her) makes no attempt at apologizing throughout the episode.
  • I Reject Your Reality: Leslie hits this big time as she point-blank tells the Church members the whole thing was a massive fraud and they refuse to accept it.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: While it is a horrible thing to happen, one can't deny that Leslie deserves the reconditioning at the Crater to a degree, seeing how she ordered dozens of them herself.
  • Lighter and Softer: Subverted, and cruelly so. Despite the hardships, the Runaways enjoy a good and carefree birthday party...but then Chase leaves them, devastating everybody.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • The statue at the Crater is modeled after the comic books version of the Gibborim.
    • Molly's middle name is revealed to be Hayes, her last name from the comics.
  • The Reveal:
    • Leslie is pregnant.
    • The woman in charge of the reconditioning is Leslie's own mother, Susan.
  • Rite of Passage: The Runaways throw a quinceanera for Molly's 15th birthday.
  • Shapeshifting: Xavin is capable of this, transforming into a young woman who showed her kindness when she had taken the form of an elderly beggar.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Xavin does some of these.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Much to everybody else's frustration, Chase keeps making excuses for their parents. It culminates with him leaving the group.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: Nico makes a vow to no longer use the Staff of One after having taken several lives with it now.
  • Truth Serum: Dale and Stacey first drug Chase and then inject him with this in order to find the rest of the kids. He only manages to give them some details of his and Gert's sex life however.
  • You Are Number 6: Susan doesn't refer to herself or Leslie by name, but by numbers.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Stacey plans on letting Old Lace out to lead them to the kids and then kill her afterwards.
  • You See, I'm Dying: Victor tells Chase that he is very ill and wants to see his son again. It's not clear whether he is sincere or not. It could also be Jonah speaking.
