Recap / Rugrats S 6 E 22 Officer Chuckie Auctioning Grandpa

Go To

The twenty-second episode of the sixth season of Rugrats (1991).

Officer Chuckie

Chuckie becomes paranoid about the others' safety.

Auctioning Grandpa

When Grandpa Lou falls asleep in a rocking chair set for auction, the babies think he's going to be auctioned off.

"Officer Chuckie" provides examples of:

  • Drives Like Crazy: Angelica at the beginning of this episode. When she drives her car, she goes too fast, knocks over some traffic cones, and rear-ends another driver. She improves her driving when she sees Officer Dan so as not to get ticketed by him.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Angelica chases the babies with her Cynthia RC car against Didi's wishes. After Chuckie rescues them, the joystick to her remote control breaks, causing the car to swerve out of control, until it runs into Didi, knocking her over and damaging itself in the process. When Didi finds out about this, she punishes Angelica for disobeying her.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: When Chuckie sees the other babies being chased away by Angelica's Cynthia RC car, he wastes no time to rescue them despite them having a falling-out moments ago.
  • Mistaken for Afterlife: When Chuckie rescues Phil from Angelica's RC car, Phil opens his eyes and says, "Am I in heaven? Where's my goldfish?"
  • Rhymes on a Dime: Officer Dan says such safety tips as "Walk, don't run, ouchies aren't fun", "Stay alert, don't get hurt", and "Never pet a dog that's strange to you, that would be a dangerous thing to do." When Chuckie tries to enforce the safety rules to his friends, one of the safety tips he gives is "Never pet a dog that's strange to you, or you might get something on your shoe."
  • Runs with Scissors: Chuckie punishes Lil for running while holding a block decorated with a picture of scissors.
  • Safety Worst: Chuckie becomes obsessed with enforcing safety rules to the point where he doesn't let his friends do anything fun. He doesn't let them run fast when they race, he doesn't let Tommy pet Spike even though Spike is his pet, he takes Dil's bottle away for drinking it too fast, and he even reprimands Lil for running with a block with a picture of scissors on it.
  • Stealth Pun: When the babies tell Angelica that they're teaching Dil how to play ball, Dil drools on the ball. Angelica then says, "Too bad all he can do is dribble."
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Tommy calls Chuckie out for enforcing his safety rules after Chuckie takes Dil's bottle away.
Tommy: That's it, Chuckie! We can't take any more of your safety rulers! You won't let us run or play in the sandbox or swing or slide or nothin'! How are we opposed to show Dil all the fun stuffs if we can't do em' no more?

"Auctioning Grandpa" provides examples of:

  • Accidental Bid: Dil picks up an auction paddle and keeps waving it while Stu is carrying him through the back of the auction crowd, causing the auctioneer to mistake Stu for a bidder and driving the price of the rocking chair to $150.
  • Auction: One is held in this episode over the rocking chair that Lou is sleeping in, which leads the babies to believe that Lou is going to be sold.
  • Baby Carriage: One of the things the babies find at the antique sale is a vintage baby carriage that they put Dil in. Dil rolls away in it, and the babies chase after him on a wooden horse. The baby carriage stops next to some blankets the babies land in.
  • Bird-Poop Gag: Didi's Bird Homes attract a flock of birds, which cover them and her in bird poop.
  • *Crack!* "Oh, My Back!": Lou's back has an audible cracking sound when he gets up from his chair.
  • Dirty Old Woman: A pair of them start bidding on the rocking chair on the off chance Lou actually does come with it.
  • Easy Come, Easy Go: Didi earns $200.00 from selling her Bird Homes to a pair of hippies. The auctioneer takes it all to pay for the rocking chair he insists Stu has to pay for due to Dil's paddle waving, despite the winning bid only being $150.
  • Hypocritical Humor: One of the things Lou finds at an antique sale is a green vest that looks like the one he wears. He looks at it and says, "Who'd wear this junk?"
  • Insult Backfire: After Grandpa's back cracks when he gets up to take the babies over to the antique auction, Stu quips, "Speaking of antiques". Grandpa proudly declares he is an antique, and pulls out an auction pamphlet which defines "antique" as "A precious treasure whose value goes up every day".
  • Literal-Minded: When the babies see a pair of hippies wanting to buy the rocking chair Lou is sitting in, saying it'll go great in their living room, they think they want to buy Lou.
  • New-Age Retro Hippie: A pair of them want to buy the rocking chair Lou falls asleep in because they think it'd go great next to the compost pile in their living room, and eventually buy Didi's bird poop covered Bird Homes.
  • Senior Sleep-Cycle: Lou falls asleep in a rocking chair set for auction, and is completely oblivious to it being sold at an auction.
  • Trouser Space: Because they don't have any money, the babies search their diapers for things to use as currency to buy Lou with.
