Recap / Rome S 1 E 06 Egeria

Go To

Vorenus has been serving as a prefect for two months, while Niobe is saddened by Evander's disappearance, with her sister Lyde and Pullo still living with them. The two men go to their post, called by Marc Antony. The tribune is watching over Rome while Caesar is chasing after Pompey in Greece. He greets senator Publius Servilius, ready to discuss the possibility of making him a consul for the year in exchange for making Caesar a co-consul and making a third of every workers in properties freed men or free citizens, thus reducing the amount of slaves working. The senator is reluctant to accept, but still agrees to the terms. At the Senate gathering, Servilius proposes his law, and it is accepted unanimously.

Vorenus is displeased with Antony's lack of reverence towards the traditions and invites Pullo to get a drink to discuss his marital problems, refusing to divorce Niobe in spite of every hurdle. His daughter is still angry for her marriage falling apart. Pullo tells Lyde that Evander may have been killed because of his gambling debts and advises her to forget about him and think about her own future. The sisters get into a fight that ends up with Lyde cursing Niobe.

Octavian continues his training with Pullo, showing progress much to his mother's pleasure. Atia thinks about sending him to Greece, but after learning that he's still a virgin, tells Pullo to take care of that and find him a suitable partner. The next day, the soldier takes the teenager with him to a pleasure house. Octavian picks a young woman named Egeria, but Pullo is dissatisfied with the price, but still pays in full. The youth asks the girl about her story, but after she tells him she barely remembers anything. He orders her to get on her fours with barely any emotion. After the act is over, Octavian leaves the chamber where Pullo asks him about it, but the young man is rather flustered.

Niobe goes to a priestess to ask for a child. In the evening, Vorenus returns home and is greeted with a good dinner. She tells him that "her calendar is correct" and asks him to lay with her.

In Greece, Caesar is occupied with chasing Pompey around, but learns that the enemy numbers are now exceeding his own, and sends a letter to Antony to ask him to send the XIII Legion as reinforcements. Pompey's envoy arrives to Rome and warns Antony against complying with the request, prompting him to think about the offer. In the evening, Atia asks him to come to the dinner and after they lay together asks him to marry her, offering him to become like a king and leave Caesar to his doom. Antony rejects the offer and leaves the house just as Octavian and Pullo return. The next morning, Atia sends Octavia to bring gifts to Servilia in an attempt to buy herself some time in case Pompey comes back, . The Junii matriarch is cold at first, but quickly relates to Octavia's hardships and asks her to come later

Vorenus is summoned by Antony to leave for Greece, along with the rest of the XIII Legion, while Octavian is sent to Mediolanium along with Timon. The tribune punches Pompey's envoy in the face, making his intentions clear. The ships get hit by a storm, and the vessel with Vorenus and Pullo on it sinks.

  • Bigger Is Better in Bed: Atia sends Servilia, among other gifts, a well-endowed slave, and every woman, including Octavia, can't help but to stare.
  • Interplay of Sex and Violence: Antony makes two naked women fight with real swords for his amusement, getting aroused after seeing their wounds. The women are, understandably, less happy about it.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Antony openly orders a senior senator around and even flirts with his wife, showing the amount of power he and Caesar have over Rome.
