Recap / Road To Berlin Ep 5 Queen Of Nederland

Go To

Clostermann is sent to lead a visit the Queen of Nederland to help raise morale in the country and spur support for Operation Southwind. When inquiring about some blue tulips in a painting, the Witches find out that they are rare flowers that are a symbol of the country and while a few bulbs were saved from the Neuroi invasion of Nederland earlier in the war, they haven't been able to get them to bloom. The Witches work to take care of the tulips. When the boiler keeping them warm at night (the tulips need to be kept continuously at 20ºC) explodes, Miyafuji uses an old Striker Unit and backpack as a power source to keep them warm through the night, learning to help stabilize her magic in the process. Hattori accidentally awakens a Neuroi while retrieving some water, and it attacks the greenhouse destroying all but one tulip. Miyafuji attacks the Neuroi with a hoe, embedding it in the outer layers and Clostermann uses Tonnerre on it to destroy the Neuroi. Excess electricity from Tonnerre hits the remaining tulip and causes it to bloom, and Clostermann finds out that her grandmother was the witch originally responsible for the blue tulips decades ago.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Artistic License – Biology: While breeders have managed to come close, true blue tulips don't actually exist.
  • Double-Meaning Title: The episode title refers to both the actual Queen of Nederland who appears in this episode and the "Queen of Nederland" breed of tulip.
  • Living Battery: Yoshika volunteered to act as one temporarily to keep the greenhouse climate controlled after the boiler blows until repairs can be made. It actually has the positive side effect of her learning how to control her magic much better after struggling with it for the past several episodes.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Shizuka was getting water outside without knowing that she woke up a Neuroi nearby. Then again, it's not entirely her fault, since she's pretty much oblivious about this.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Yoshika is visibly pissed off at the Neuroi who destroyed the greenhouse and attacks it with a gardening tool, though the last tulip remains unharmed.
