"It used to be enough to just act but now everyone from Reese Witherspoon to Eva Longoria is a producer and I'm trying to catch up. And also maybe start to take some control over my life, which is long overdue."
Bree

"Baskets" is the seventh episode of Reboot.

Hannah is tasked with managing Clay's Looping Lines and is dismayed to learn that Clay is horrible at it. Meanwhile, Gordon agrees to crack a story for Josie. Hannah hasn't told him she's allowed Bree into the writer's room; Bree quickly frustrates him with her self-centered pitches.

Reed is roped into playing basketball with some of Zack's friends, who turn out to be a group of Jewish preteens and teenagers. Though initially hesitant due to his size advantage, Reed eventually goes all-out after they taunt him. However, he accidentally breaks one of the kids' noses. Two observing teenage girls record the incident, but Zack gets them to delete the videos by agreeing to go to prom with them.

Gordon and Hannah swap places. Gordon tries the harsh approach with Clay, to no avail. Clay admits to Gordon that he used to drink to get through ADR; Gordon gives him a hug and Clay is able to rerecord the line. After a pep talk from Selma, the older Jewish female writer, Bree comes up with a good pitch that the writers are able to build upon.

Tropes:

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: One of the lines in Whitney's Thanksgiving monologue:
Whitney: I thought you guys cared about me but now I have all these questions. Who is my real family? Who can I really count on? And why isn't Jake wearing any pants?
  • David Versus Goliath: Lampshaded. Being a tall middle-aged man, Reed easily dominates a team of teenagers at basketball. They repeatedly compare themselves to David and him to Goliath.
  • Looping Lines: In-Universe. Clay's subplot this episode is having to rerecord dialogue. He's terrible at it. Hannah manages to get him through the first two, but he relapses when the third is a tongue-twister. Made worse by Timberly arriving and nailing her ADR monologue on the first take.
  • Unmanly Secret: Invoked. Bree pitches a story about Lawrence secretly doing ballet and hiding it from the rest of the family.
