Team RWBY (And Oobleck), roll out!
Written by Miles Luna, Monty Oum & Kerry Shawcross
Directed by Monty Oum & Kerry Shawcross

"I can assure you, we will not be establishing a single base of operations; rather, we will be traversing several miles of hazardous wasteland and making camp in any defendable locations we may stumble upon."
Doctor Bartholomew Oobleck

Dr. Oobleck takes Team RWBY on reconnaissance to an abandoned city that is teaming with Grimm. While the girls fight, Oobleck interrogates their reasons for wanting to become Huntresses.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: Oobleck's questions prove more thought provoking than the team realized as they set up camp.
  • Exact Words: When it's revealed that Ruby smuggled Zwei along, Oobleck is furious that Ruby disobeyed his order to leave their bags behind. Ruby points out that he told them to leave them behind before he said to listen to all his instructions from this point forward.
    Oobleck: She's not wrong...
  • It Can Think: What Oobleck reveals to Ruby and the audience. Apparently, if a Grimm lives long enough (on the order of centuries), it'll eventually become smart enough to know not to directly attack humans or faunus. The example, a small pack of mammoth-esque Grimm Ruby spots in the distance are content to leave them alone.
    Ruby: What are they doing?
    Oobleck: Waiting.
  • Orphaned Etymology: In the Chain of Corrections following Oobleck's reference to "tussles", the existence of "Brussels sprouts" are mentioned. Despite being named after the capital of Belgium, places that do not exist on Remnant, "Brussels" does mean "settlement in the marsh"; this means the word could have a valid etymology within the Remnant setting as "sprouts from the settlement in the marsh".
  • Tempting Fate: Yang, Weiss, and Blake are a little depressed after thinking over Oobleck's questions. In an effort to cheer them up, Ruby says tomorrow will be a better day.

"Don't worry. Things will be better tomorrow."
