Ben leaps into a stock car racer called Rick Jarrett Jr. He's there to save Rick's father, but there's interference from the future, as Gideon Ridge, Quantum Leap's new boss, fires the team, and makes plans to replace Ben as the leaper.
Tropes:
- Alternate Timeline: After Jenn is killed, the team creates one by changing Jeffrey's past. In doing so, they change the present, so that they were never fired, Jenn was never killed, and Gideon is now a benefactor of the team. Ben and Addison are the only ones who remember the previous history.
- Despair Event Horizon: Jenn is shot dead. There's only one way that can be fixed, so the team decides it's OK to change their own history.
- Hope Spot: They have the swap code, and Addison decides to leap, intending to replace Ben as the leaper, as she was supposed to be the leaper in the first place. However, when she arrives in the past, she finds Ben has leaped there as well. They're reunited, but Ben doesn't get to go home, and now the team needs to find a new person to be the hologram, which was intended to be Ben's role.
- Never My Fault: Jeffrey does appear to be a little disturbed that he ordered Jenn's death. However, instead of taking any responsibility or doing any serious self-reflecting, he instead puts all the blame on Ben for her dying.
- The Reveal: Gideon is actually Jeffrey Nally, Hannah's son. He has a vendetta against the team because he thinks Ben killed his Dad, who died in a car crash after learning about Ben's letter to Hannah warning her that he'd die a different way a few months earlier.
