1984

Ben leaps into Brian Conway, a cameraman for disgraced journalist Connie Davis. After receiving a message from an anonymous source, they go to investigate Herbicore, a pesticide that has caused numerous cancer deaths.

Meanwhile, Tom breaks up with Addison.

Tropes:

  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Chet Barlowe, the CEO of Herbicore, is willing to let thousands die of cancer because pulling his product from the market would be expensive.
  • Faking the Dead: Robbie Barlowe fakes his death in a car explosion when Ben and Connie get too close to the truth about Herbicore's product.
  • I Regret Nothing: Ian goes from being apologetic after being caught out for their behavior to defiantly proclaiming this.
  • Internal Reveal: Magic, Tom and everyone else at Project Quantum Leap finally learn that Ian made unauthorized use of "borrowed" technology to locate Ben and that Jenn was complicit after the fact.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The masked assailant, later revealed to be Chet's security guard, held up Ben at gunpoint, warned Ben not go investigate any further, and pistol-whipped him to drop him. Later on, when Ben confronts the same man when he's at Chet's company, he turns the tables on the guard by revealing highly personal information, forcing the guard to lower his weapon, and knocking the guard out with a foreign object on the desk in a tit-for-tat.
  • My Greatest Failure: Connie regards one of her sources for a previous major story being killed as this, which is why she left New York and is now covering fluff pieces in a small town. She nearly suffers a breakdown when this seems to happen again — though Ben realizes that history is not repeating itself.
  • Take a Third Option: With their violation of protocol and the law in the service of finding Ben exposed, Magic seems forced to choose between firing either Ian or Jenn as part of the project's attempt to mollify Gideon Ridge. While the episode implies that Jenn will be the one let go, as Ian is too essential as the systems programmer, Magic ultimately turns in his own resignation.
