Recap / Quake II 64 Command Core

Go To

The last set of missions has Viper descending to the core of the Strogg resource processing planet.

The levels in this unit are "Descent to Core" and "Command Core".

This unit shows examples of:

  • Boss Rush: Once you reach the arena in "Command Core", you battle against two Tank Commanders who glow red in the original N64 version of the levels. After one of the Tank Commanders fell, you fight a Hornet. After the other Tank Commander fell, you fight against another Hornet.
  • Continuity Nod: Much like the Makron in the PC version, once you get to the ending of "Descent to Core", you watch one of the Tank Commanders being teleported, with you following afterwards.
  • Cosmetic Award: Completing the unit in the 2023 remastered edition nets the "Shut Down the Core" achievement.
  • Credits Gag: You're shown all the Strogg types you fought against, from the lower levels to the bosses.
  • Elevator Action Sequence: "Descent to Core" is a level-wide example. While you descend you have to fight against the Strogg and the level itself, as the slightest misstep can crush you.
  • Everything Trying to Kill You: In "Descent to Core" you fight as much against the Strogg as you do against the environment.
  • Point of No Return: Everywhere in "Descent to Core", which can be jarring if you're trying to get 100% Completion.
  • A Winner Is You: Unlike other games in the series, there's no ending cutscene, just Viper exiting in an elevator and a congratulating message.
  • Wolfpack Boss: The last portion of the last level has you facing two beefy Tank Commanders and two Hornets who use Hyperblasters instead of Chainguns.
