Recap / Prehistoric Park Reimagined S 2 E 9 Storm In The Desert

Go To

Two weeks after the basilosaurus mission, and with Alice still on suspension, Drew teams up with Leon and Jack to travel to Cretaceous Mongolia to rescue both the incredibly long finger clawed therizinosaurus and the iconic dromaeosaur velociraptor. And at the same time that Drew and the rescue team are off in the past, a visit from Novum top brass unfolds. But what sort of changes could end up unfolding in the future as a result of what the visitors end up seeing and learning during said visit?

  • Mythology Gag: The episode shares a title with the velociraptor mission chapter(s) from both Prehistoric Park: Extinction World and the original Prehistoric Earth.
  • The Peter Principle: Heavily implied in this chapter to be the case with Drew's position as park manager. While his reckless tendencies and preference to react in the moment with plans thought up on the fly work perfectly fine for his work in wrangling animals to rescue for the park as rescue team leader as well as in resolving any code reds or other emergencies involving the animals at the park, his tendency to fill out paperwork at a leisurely pace, pass important managerial duties and responsibilities onto other people, and ignore any issues that don't involve the animals until the last possible moment end up making it all too clear that he's not necessarily the most qualified to run the park at an administrative level.
  • Raptor Attack: Averted as per usual with the dromaeosaurs and troodonts rescued. While the dromaeosaurs in particular act relatively antagonistic towards the rescue team, they're no more aggressive than any modern day predatory animal, and they are accurately feathered, accurately sized, and possess a somewhat realistic level of intelligence.
  • Scared of What's Behind You: When a large group of various herbivore dinosaurs gathered at an oasis start acting unnerved, the rescue team has just enough time to briefly wonder what's spooking them so much before Leon looks behind himself and his friends and swiftly points out that a tarbosaurus they'd encountered the previous day is now standing right behind them and in full view of the herbivores.
  • Sea of Sand: While there are several desert trees and rocks to break up the monotony, the environment in Cretaceous Mongolia for the majority of the chapter is largely described as a vast expanse of sand.
  • Shout-Out:
    • To The Land Before Time: The alpha male of the rescued tarbosaurus pack is named Red Claw. Similarly, the alpha female and male of the tsaagan pack have been confirmed by Word of God to be named Screech and Thud. Finally, one of the therizinosaurus is confirmed by Word of God to be named Wild Arms.
    • The deinocheirus are portrayed exactly as they're depicted in Prehistoric Planet, complete with having the same color scheme.
    • One of the adult male protoceratops is named Orson. The female that Orson mates with is named Bix. And finally, one of Orson and Bix's daughters is named Charlene (with a planned future mate for her intended to be named Maybeck).
  • Temper-Ceratops: The protoceratops and bagaceratops, when at risk of getting hunted and eaten by a pack of velociraptor and tsaagan (respectively), prove quite fierce and capable of holding their own in defending themselves against the predators. And while the bagaceratops manage to be convinced into peacefully entering the portal, the protoceratops, in contrast, end up goaded into charging through in a territorial rage.
  • Tough Armored Dinosaur: Pinacosaurus and Minotaurasaurus are amongst the animals rescued, and not only is their thick armored skin greatly emphasized in their descriptions in the narrative, but they also prove animals not to mess with lightly when Drew and Jack go so far as to openly goad them into charging at them for the sake of getting them through the portal.
  • True Companions: Alice's bond with Will, Matt, and Kaisumi is well and truly solidified as true friendship to the end as the latter trio all join in to give Alice a peptalk and cheer her up while she's still suspended at the park.
  • Wham Line: Not too long after Kyle has gone on a short spiel in which he gives a seemingly fairly balanced take on how he feels about Drew as park manager, he suddenly follows up with the following phrase that very swiftly gets the attention of Theodore and the rest of the visitors from Novum:
Kyle: Although...there is something you should know.
