Recap / Power Rangers Dino Supercharge S2E4 A Date With Danger

Go To

A new monster crashes down in the clearing close to the Prison Ship. The being,Singe, is more than aware of the Energems on Earth, and makes a bargain with Snide. In the rangers camp however, Chase is busy preparing for his latest date. He will be heading to the skate park to meet Kaylee, but the others believe it will go badly, since he only ever focuses on himself. True to form, Chase spends over an hour performing skate tricks for her enjoyment, which only serves to bore her.

As she leaves, Singe attacks the city, drawing the rangers out. Singe proves to be the toughest monster they have faced, with his blaster being able to destroy concrete pillars and his sword knocking the rangers back with a single slash. When one of his blasts hits a civilian, Chase goes to get her to safety, running right into Kaylee. He gives her care of the woman, telling her to get to safety, before leaving to return to the fight. Even with their combined power they are unable to defeat Singe, and he teleports away, complaining of a headache.

Back at the cafe, Kaylee breaks up with Chase after he shows her his extensive medal and trophy collection, and shocks him by saying she has fallen for the Black Ranger, not realizing the pair are one and the same. On the ship, Singe makes a note of the pair and mentions to Heckyl how easy it would be to get the Black Energem, if something bad were to happen to the girl...

Chase rants about the Black Ranger stealing his girlfriend, even noting he went 'behind his own back' to get her, all the while the others are holding their heads. He resolves to go out on a date with Kaylee, as the Black Ranger. He surprises her in the park, and the two spend the day together; riding the Dino Cycle on the beach, watching the stars with a telescope. She tells him that she wants to know who is under the helmet, but he declines, albeit unhappily. After a pep talk from Keeper, he breaks up with her, before urging her to be with the guy she was with prior, saying that guys like him are really scared around women, and don't know how to handle dates.

Tyler meanwhile has received a letter from one of his dad's fellow explorers, Rusty, who explains that James Navarro (Tyler's father) saved him from a cave in but was trapped himself. The pair say that if anyone would be able to escape a cave in, it would be James. Tyler gets called away by Kendall, who informs him that Singe is back. Singe and Wrench are holding Kaylee hostage and waiting for Chase, but he fearlessly skates towards them and rescues Kaylee. As she runs to safety, the other rangers arrive and the five morph without Tyler. Singe escapes and Wrench battles against Chase, before being downed by a combined blast. Singe however has used the time to regroup and calls for a Magnabeam to surprise attack the rangers. Without zords, the rangers are helpless, until the arrival of the Plesio Zord and Tyler. The six do battle with Singe, who is more than a match for the Plesio Zord, even with the addition of the Para and Raptor Zords, effortlessly blocking both finishers. Before he can defeat the rangers however, Fury reverses the Magnabeam, shrinking Singe and letting him get away.

While the rangers regroup in the cafe, and Chase and Kaylee rekindle their relationship, Singe and Fury get into a heated argument, with the latter saying that if Singe doesn't watch his step, then Fury will deal with him for good.

Tropes:

  • …But He Sounds Handsome: Black Ranger talks Chase up to Kaylee this way.
  • Butt-Monkey: Chase gets hit with Amusing Injuries and bad timing galore this episode, twice being electrocuted by a Van de Graff generator, and forgetting about the grill (again).
  • Concealment Equals Cover: Subverted. When Tyler and Chase took cover behind a pillar from Singe's shots, Singe simply destroyed the pillar, hitting them.
  • Crazy Is Cool: How Singe justifies his being able to get an energem to Fury. "Oh please, I travel in a burning asteroid. Need I say more?"
  • Foreshadowing: Rusty's interest in Tyler's energem seems to hint at knowing more about them then he lets on at the time... As we find out in the next episodes, there's a reason for this.
  • Loves My Alter Ego: Chase not only suffers from this, but rants about how the black ranger stole his girl.
  • Mood Whiplash: We get a scene where it seems Tyler might be about to read through a letter detailing what happened to his lost father... then a building explodes and the moment is cut short.
  • Recycled Title: From a Dating Catwoman episode of Power Rangers in Space.
