Ash and co. stumble onto a Pokémon preserve guarded by a bunch of Mightyena and one Poochyena that hasn't evolved yet. Never having seen an evolution before, Max decides to help Poochyena catch up with its friends.

- Hypocritical Humor: Ash disapproves of Max's idea of faking a battle to help Poochyena evolve despite him having done the same back in Kanto to help Cassandra's Paras evolve.
- Although it should be said Ash was only doing it to help Cassandra with her business, whereas Max has no good reason for trying to push Poochyena into evolving, even if it may not want to.
