Going through the Daybreak Contest, Dawn ends up face to face with Ursula in the Final. Does Dawn have a trump card of her own with Mamoswine and Cyndaquil?
This episode contains examples of the following tropes:
- Breaking Old Trends: The first 5th ribbon win for our female protagonist where it isn’t the last contest before the Grand Festival.
- Loophole Abuse: Using the same attack repeatedly in a Contest loses points, which Ursula exploits with Encore.
- Kick Them While They're Down: Ursula taunts Dawn about her Embarrassing Nickname when Dawn's relived her childhood nightmare in front of a Contest audience. You'd think she's been through enough at this point.
- Fire/Ice Duo: Dawn takes the Final with a combination of Cyndaquil's Flame Wheel and Mamoswine's Ice Shard.
- Freak Out: Dawn goes into a brief one (complete with a Big "NO!") when her hair is frazzled in the middle of a Contest and Ursula mocks her for it. Thankfully, Cyndaquil and Mamoswine encourage her to snap out of it and finish the battle.
- Violation of Common Sense: To break the Encore, Dawn has her team attack each other, which obviously hurts her score.
