Recap / Pokemon S 12 E 10 Another One Gabites The Dust

Go To

During the Chocovine Town Pokémon Contest, Dawn encounters a new coordinator who is arrogant and snobbish.

The following are the tropes that are associated with this episode

  • Advantage Ball: Ursula's Gabite holds a massive advantage over Dawn's Pachirisu thanks to it's secondary Ground typing making it immune to Pachirisu's electric attacks allowing it to curb stomp Pachirisu at the beginning. However, Dawn manages to turn things around by having Pachirisu use it's electricity in a defensive manner allowing her to wear down Ursula's points enough to win.
  • Call-Back: Jessie remembers Ursula as the girl with the Gabite who failed to make it past the first round in the Wallace Cup.
    • Also, during the montage, the theme played is a version of the intro song to "Battle Frontier" (except it uses the phrase "Let the battle begin" instead of "It's the Battle Frontier."
  • Establishing Character Moment: Ursula makes her debut in this episode and the first thing she does is insult Dawn's Pachirisu. This is the moment that Dawn has found herself another unfriendly rival.
  • Jerkass: Ursula is not a nice woman even compared to Jessie.
  • No-Sell: During the finals, Ursula's Gabite has a massive advantage due to its Dragon/Ground typing. This makes it immune to Pachirisu's Electric-type moves, leaving Super Fang as its only means of attack.
  • Pet the Dog: Even though they lost, Ursula still genuinely thanked her Gabite for doing a great job showing that despite her arrogance, she still loves her own Pokemon.
  • Sore Loser: Surprisingly subverted. Though she was annoyed that she lost, Ursula still told her Gabite she did a great job and even admitted that Dawn did a good job.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Ursula, until this contest, hasn't made it past the first round of the previous ones she has entered. Now, not only did she make it through, she placed second showing that, despite her arrogance, she has gotten a lot better.
  • Victory by Endurance: Dawn eventually had to win by this way. Since her Pachirisu couldn't hurt Gabite using it's electric attacks and only had Super Fang to use, Dawn was then able to have her Pachirisu use it's electricity to block Gabite's attacks allowing her to win by wearing down Ursula's points enough before the time ended.
  • You Will Not Evade Me: Besides having a typing advantage, Ursula's Gabite presents a tough challenge for Dawn's Pachirisu due to its streamlined physique, making it impossible for Pachirisu to dodge.
