Go To

Ash and co. arrive at Oreburgh City for Ash's first Sinnoh gym battle and meet Roark, the gym leader who also runs a mining crew. However, Paul has gotten there first so Ash waits his turn, taking the opportunity to watch Roark and Paul battle. While he is happy to see a battle, however, he isn't too thrilled about seeing more of Paul's heartless attitude towards his Pokemon.

  • Bad Boss: Paul once again showing he’s not exactly an ideal trainer.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Despite the type disadvantage, Geodude beats Azumarill easily, by using its Hidden Power to block Hydro Pump and attack Azumarill in one move and then kicking it around the arena with two blows of Rollout.
  • Foreshadowing: When Chimchar activates it’s Blaze ability, Paul is not only looking pleased with it, but also congratulates him upon defeat instead of scolding him. All of this hints at exactly WHY Paul caught Chimchar in the first place.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Hidden Power gains the ability to block attacks mostly so Azumarill doesn't clean house by itself.
  • Pet the Dog: Paul actually praises Chimchar upon defeating Roark’s Onix, and how often has he complimented his Chimchar, even when it won a battle?
  • Scissors Cuts Rock: Paul opts to send the Water Azumarill up against Roark's Rock/Ground Geodude because of the type advantage. Geodude easily beats Azumarill, and Paul gives her away in fury to a passing boy in the next episode.
  • The Worf Barrage: Poor Azumarill. Who knew Geodude could block Hydro Pumps with Hidden Power?
