* StrongAsTheyNeedToBe: Paul brings Azumarill in to wash Roark's team away like any savvy player would; good thing Roark's Geodude has the writers behind it--it uses Hidden Power to both negate and attack ''through'' Azumarill's Hydro Pump, which knocks Azumarill down long enough for Geodude to get two free hits of Rollout in.

Same issues here as with the characters page: A Pokemon powering through a bad type matchup happens all the time in the anime, so even if it's breaking the games' rules, it's not breaking the anime's. Hand Wave and Strong As They Need To Be would only qualify if the show was being inconsistent with itself, which it isn't. One character ignoring Paul's rudeness doesn't make him a Karma Houdini, nor does it mean the writer agrees with his actions.

* AuthorOnBoard: Roark, a Gym Leader and thus an ostensibly ReasonableAuthorityFigure, blithely ignores Paul's nasty treatment of Azumarill for losing.

* {{Handwave}}: The battle between Paul's Azumarill and Roark's Geodude is decided entirely by the anime giving three free shots in a row to Geodude. Brock glosses over that with a theory that Roark's Geodude beat Paul's Azumarill because Roark trained it to beat Water-types.
* KarmaHoudini: Paul somehow gets away with badmouthing his own Pokemon in front of Roark. Roark doesn't react at all. In earlier episodes, Gym Leaders and other officials would scold Trainers who did this.

* CurbStompBattle: Despite the type disadvantage, Geodude beats Azumarill easily. To wit, Paul orders Azumarill to use Hydro Pump against Geodude, but the move misses (in the games, it only has an 80% accuracy), and Geodude counters with a super effective Hidden Power, and then Rollout.

* ScissorsCutsRock: Paul opts to send the Water Azumarill up against Roark's Rock/Ground Geodude because of the type advantage. Geodude easily beats Azumarill, and Paul gives her away in fury to a passing boy in the next episode.

* {{Foreshadowing}}: When Chimchar activates it’s Blaze ability, Paul is not only looking pleased with it, but also congratulates him upon defeat instead of scolding him. All of this hints at exactly WHY Paul caught Chimchar in the first place.

* NewPowersAsThePlotDemands: Hidden Power gains the ability to block attacks mostly so Azumarril doesn't clean house by itself.

Ash and co. arrive at Oreburgh City for Ash's first Sinnoh gym battle and meet Roark, the gym leader who also runs a mining crew. However, Paul has gotten there first so Ash waits his turn, taking the opportunity to watch Roark and Paul battle. While he is happy to see a battle, however, he isn't too thrilled about seeing more of Paul's heartless attitude towards his Pokemon.
