Finally arriving at Trottingham City, Flash is eager to earn his first Gym Badge by beating the Gym leader of the city, but he and Twilight first must resolve a theft at their industrial complex, while befriending a new companion on their journey.
- Actually, I Am Him: At first, Doc just seems like an eccentric scientist, but he later reveals that he was the Trottingham City Gym leader that Flash was looking to challenge.
- Ascended Extra: This marks the first appearance of Time Turner or Doc as a major character in the series, in which he'll continue to remain a prominent character far more than in the canon series.
- Biting-the-Hand Humor: When the group learns that Nurse Redheart has nearly identical family members that share the same name and job as her, just like with Officer Hard Case, Flash comments "This is starting to feel like a running gag from a poorly made yet awesome kid's show".
- Cliffhanger: After the main conflict of the episode is resolved, Flash and Doc prepare to start a Pokémon battle to determine if Flash is ready to earn his first Gym badge, but the battle is only resolved in the next chapter.
- Heroic BSoD: When Flash gets overwhemled by Big Score, Rickashay, and Boulder's Pokémon ganging up on him, Spike tells Twilight to get in there and help him. But, Twilight just remembers her previous disastrous attempts to battle against Movine and Pipple, and simply says she can't do anything.
- Mythology Gag: After being hit by the Higear at high speed, the thieves Big Score, Rickashay, and Boulder are sent flying into the horizon, a nod to how Team Rocket is usually beaten in Pokémon: The Series.
- Shout-Out: Flash says his grandma has four steps to winning a battle: "Make the plan, execute the plan, expect the plan to go off the rails, throw away the plan". This is a famous saying used by Leonard Snart.
- Terrible Trio: Big Score, Rickashay, and Boulder are the three ponies behind the theft of Trottinham's Higear, in which they plan to sell them off to the highest bidder.
