Recap / Pokemon EA 39 Cloudsdale Sky Racers

Go To

After spending three days training, waiting for Spitfire's return, Flash and his friends learns from a trainer named Soarin that Cloudsdale is having one of its biggest annual events soon, the Great Cloudsdale Race, and decide to participate. But the race soon faces sabatoge when some old bullies of Rainbow try to make sure she doesn't win.

  • Adaptational Villainy: Rainbow's three bullies didn't do anything worse than make fun of her and Fluttershy, even as adults. Here, they go out of their way to sabotage the race with explosives to try to make sure Rainbow doesn't win, putting her Wondor and several other Pokémon at risk in the process.
  • The Big Race: The group enters the Great Cloudsdale Race, with the winner getting their picture in the Hall of Fame. It ends in a tie between Rainbow's Wondor and Soarin's Staraptor.
  • Death Glare: Cloud and Springer glare down at the three bullies before beating them up.
  • Defensive "What?": Rainbow gives one at the end of the chapter when she sees everyone giving her knowing smirks after she says goodbye to Soarin.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Rainbow develops one with Soarin. When the race is sabotaged, they have Wondor and Staraptor protect each other from the falling rocks with Close Combat and Crunch Claw. The chapter also heavily implies that Rainbow develops a crush on Soarin.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Cloud Clipper and Springer overhear Rainbow's bullies gloating after they sabotage the race. So, after the race is over, the two of them beat the three of them up off-screen and Cloud goes to have the three of them arrested.
  • Ship Tease: The chapter is pretty heavy on it for Rainbow and Soarin. They both form a quick friendship due to their shared love of Flying-Types and growing up in Cloudsdale, they work together to protect each other's Pokémon during the race and end up tying, and Rainbow gets red faced when saying goodbye to Soarin at the end of the chapter. It seems like Everyone Can See It too, since they all give Rainbow knowing smirks at the end.
  • Shout-Out: The scene where Cloud Clipper and Springer beating up three bullies that tried to sabotage Rainbow during a race is similar to what Jack Atlas did to three goons who tried to sabotage Akiza in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds.
  • Took a Level in Badass: The opening scene of the chapter shows Flash training all of his Pokémon for his battle against Spitfire, having them all take on various Flying-Types from the group, even Springer and Prongs who are at a disadvantage against Flying-Types.
    • While training, Springer defeats Flitanium, in contrast to the last time they fought.
    • Hopper has been getting flying lessons from Cloud Clipper and her Pidgeot, teaching him more techniques to go along with his increased power.
    • Owlicious successfully learns Psychic.
