Recap / Parks and Recreation - S02 E15

Go To

The local candy company Sweetums has entered into a partnership with the Parks Department, taking over the concessions. They also introduce a new healthy energy bar called NutriYums. Ron approves because he thinks the entire government should be privatized.

Tom is about to move out of his old house he had shared with Wendy. He recruits April, Andy, Jerry, Donna, and Mark, who has a pick-up truck, to help move his stuff to a new apartment he's bought. April only agrees to assist Tom's moving efforts so as to be closer to Andy.

Leslie won't let Ron drive home from the Sweetums event because she feels he has had too much to drink. Ron disagrees that he is impaired. The next morning, Ron confronts Leslie, showing her a harp he made last night after drinking more whiskey.

The Parks department employees enjoy the "healthy" NutriYums bars, but when Ann arrives, she notes that they are full of sugar and corn syrup. After the sugar high, everyone crashes.

Leslie and Ann do research on Sweetums. Leslie informs City Manager Paul about their concerns, but Ron opposes her. Leslie suggests a public forum and Paul agrees.

At Tom and Wendy's, everyone arrives to help Tom move out. While everyone else loads up the truck, Tom goofs off.

Ann does a presentation at the forum on the unhealthy features of NutriYums, but Nick Newport Jr., the son of Sweetums founder Nick Newport Sr., arrives and gives out free NutriYums to the crowd. The crowd votes to allow Sweetums to run the concessions.

Tom learns that his new place has a gas leak and he won't be able to move in until that Monday, but he can't put his stuff back in Wendy's house. He suggests everyone take his stuff to their homes, but they bring it to the Parks office.

April gets upset at her boyfriends when they make fun of Andy.

Ron apologizes to Leslie for acting like a jerk.

Tropes

  • Accentuate the Negative: Both Ron and Leslie do this when it comes the time to vote.
  • Appeal to Nature: When pressed by Leslie over whether corn syrup is healthy, the Sweetums rep repeatedly insists that it's natural. (Which isn't really true anyway, as it's made by artificially breaking down corn starch, and in the case of high-fructose corn syrup — the kind used in Nutri-Yums — converting some of the resulting glucose into fructose.)
  • Blatant Lies: NutriYum is sold as a healthy option on advertising, but it takes Ann just a look on the back of the wrapping to tell that it's not the least bit healthy and it's basically a block of sugar.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Tom, who can't say anything about his feelings for Wendy.
  • Comically Missing the Point: April gets out of helping Tom move by telling him she'd rather watch a sex tape of her grandparents. When she learns that Andy is going to help, she joins in. Tom confronts her with her lie. Andy's response:
Andy: I think that that's really, really sweet, that your grandparents still make love.
  • Companion Cube: Tom treats his DJ Roomba like this.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Leslie walks around with a table that shows how much someone can drink and how long they should wait before driving.
  • Eagleland: Ron believes the greatest thing about America is the freedom of choice (even if those choices are unhealthy).
Ron: The whole point of this country is if you want to eat garbage, balloon up to 600 pounds, and die of a heart attack at 43, you can! You are free to do so. To me, that's beautiful.
  • End of an Era: How Wendy refers to Tom moving.
  • Evil Corporation: Sweetums, who is trying to take over the snack kiosks and lying about their "healthy" option.
  • Exact Words: As the man from Sweetums said, Corn Syrup is good in moderation, which is true, but he never said the NutriYums used it in moderation.
  • Friendly Rival: Leslie and Ron, who are on opposite sides of the Sweetums controversy.
  • Hidden Depths: Ron is able to craft a harp.
  • Nutritional Nightmare: The NutriYum bars are basically a block of sugar.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Leslie breaks rules and screams when running from a library; she is even willing to hide the things she wants to take under her coat and run away with them.
  • Running Gag: Every time someone talks with someone from the Library Department, the librarians accuse them of having a late fee on some book. This time, it was Leslie with "Mysteries of the Female Orgasm".
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Again, it's shown that the Library Department is this to the Parks Department.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Donna and Tom: Tom models some of his outfits for Justin and Leslie. They are particularly appalled by a white leather suit, but Donna likes it.
  • Too Dumb to Live: The citizens of Pawnee don't seem able to understand the most basics concepts of what Ann talks about and are easily convinced by the advertisement.
