- The Atoner: Miguel sees signing up to train the dog as a way to make up for all the bad he has done.
- Call-Back: Schillinger uses the same phony offer of protection he used in Beecher all the way back in the first episode on Winthrop. It goes roughly the same way.
- Cuteness Proximity: Alvarez immediately starts gushing over the guide dog he's supposed to train.
- Despair Event Horizon: Hill has crossed it due to his mother's death, falling off the wagon and going back to drugs. He joins up with the guide dog program so he can feel something again.
- Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Ryan and Cyril kill Li Chen on the premise of protecting Suzanne.
- Enemy Mine: Pancamo doesn't agree to help Beecher protect Adam out of any goodness but because he wants to get back at Schillinger.
- Innocently Insensitive: Beecher makes a genuine effort to help Augustus cope with his mother's death, but the blunt way he goes about it just upsets Augustus.
- Kick the Dog: Robson and another Aryan torturing Lalar to the point of death.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Alvarez is overcome with guilt over inadvertently getting Jaime Velez killed. He goes to Mukada for advice, who tells him that he has to try to atone for his actions.
- Not Me This Time: Ryan really is telling the truth about what happened with Jia.
- Never My Fault: Guenzel goes on a rambling monologue trying to excuse himself and Winthrop for raping a woman. Beecher softly but firmly tells him that he did it either way, and that he needs to accept it.
- Politically Incorrect Villain: Jia calls Cyril "the tard".
- Reasonable Authority Figure.McManus does what he can to assist Said in helping Omar and gives Omar a room he can sing in without angering the other inmates.
- Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Said holds Adam in contempt and refuses to endanger his brothers by protecting him.
- Self-Serving Memory: Vern claims to have never raped anyone despite one of his victims being in the same room. Beecher unsurprisingly literally lashes out at him, as a result.
- Upper-Class Twit: Guenzel never even had to make his own bed before.
