The tutorial mission for Half-Life: Opposing Force. At Santego Military Base, Arizona, the player character, Corporal Adrian Shephard, and several other Marines of the HECU are put through Advanced Training from Senior Drill Instructor Dwight T. Barnes. Shephard goes through basic training for the player to learn the mechanics of the game. Some of which you only ever see in this game, such as squad mechanics, night vision goggles and rope climbing.

- Captain Obvious: Shephard gets shot point-blank with a shotgun to demonstrate the effectiveness of the PCV armor vest."As you can see, you are NOT dead!"
- Drill Sergeant Nasty: Drill Instructors Barnes and Sharpe play this straight to a T, constantly belittling and berating Shephard until he can prove himself in the various obstacle courses and shooting ranges. Drill Instructors Dwight T. Barnes and Sharp are these for the new HECU recruits including Shephard, alongside several other unnamed drill instructors. Both Sergeants subject Shephard through some very challenging courses, one of which includes going through simulations of the very hazardous environments that the HECU are trained to fight in.
- Justified Tutorial: In contrast to Freeman and Calhoun having to go through the Black Mesa Hazard Course, Cpl. Shephard goes through an advanced training course in boot camp, which includes firearms training, environmental hazard training, and working together with other HECU Marines.
- Training from Hell: The boot camp training for HECU demonstrates two: one that involves fully charging a PCV reactive armor so that it can be demonstrated, via being blasted point blank by a shotgun wielding marine. And the other involves crawling under a makeshift bush while under live machine gun fire, and it is possible to get killed in the middle of the training if not careful.

- Video Game Cruelty Punishment: When you're being trained in the use of a sniper rifle, there's nothing stopping you from just turning around and shooting your drill instructor dead. However, do so and Shepard is set to await a court martial, sending you back to your last checkpoint.
