Recap / OKKO Lets Be Heroes S 1 E 28 No More Pow Cards

Go To

When KO realizes Pow Cards exclude Dendy for being a kappa, he’s at a loss of what to do.

Tropes:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: Mr. Cardsley is quite sure that kappas shouldn't have Pow Cards until K.O. asks him if he even knows any.
  • Art Shift: When Dendy is telling story about her species, the art style shifts to watercolor style.
  • Cat Folk: Mr. Cardsley and his grandfather and founder of Pow Card Industries, Powio B. Cardsley.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The backstory Dendy gives for Kappas (they lived in peace before settlers forced them into substandard living arrangements, and were discriminated against and painted in a negative light) sounds like what happened to Native Americans.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: K.O. and Dendy succeed in getting Pow Card Industries to make cards for Kappa, and Dendy gets a card of her own.
  • Family Business: Pow Card Industries.
  • Fake-Out Fade-Out: After K.O. and Dendy resolve to not throw away their Pow Cards, there's an Iris Out on K.O. But then he realizes that they still have to convince Pow Card Industries to recognize kappas.
  • Fantastic Racism: Kappa like Dendy are discriminated against and referred to as monsters, and are thus considered ineligible for Pow Cards.
  • Idiosyncratic Wipes: When K.O. and Dendy decide to figure out why Pow Cards exclude kappas, a symbol of K.O. and Dendy zooms in with Dendy wearing a deerstalker hat and looking through a magnify glass and K.O. wearing a bowler hat while looking at a butterfly. Obvious Sherlock Homage.
  • Kappa: Dendy, who for some reason looks more human-like than her parents.
  • Living Statue: The statue of the Pow Card Industries founder is a robot that attacks K.O. and Dendy when they try to sneak into the main computer.
  • Moral Pragmatist: Mr. Cardsley is convinced to include kappa in the Pow Card system, at first on a trial basis, and then permanently... because it turns out to widen his customer base, making him more money.
  • Pooled Funds: After making so much money cause of the kappas, Mr. Cardsley swims in technos. As a background gag, Carla (smiling but motionless) sinks in the coins.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Of course Dendy and K.O. were caught after they fought with the Living Statue and made a heck of noise while doing so.
  • Swiss-Cheese Security: Dendy and K.O. eventually get caught in the Pow Card Industries headquarters, but not before they make it all the way into the mainframe.
  • Warts and All: Dendy and K.O. almost destroy their Pow Card collections because their makers discriminate against kappa, but instead decide to live with this negative quality and try to make it better.
