The trial for Jeffrey Hudson is finally here, forcing Athena to revisit her traumatic assault. However, a series of ransomware attacks allows Jeffrey to escape court with Athena hot on his heels. Eddie thinks he suffers a heart attack, while Maddie’s postpartum depression grows worse.

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • A Fool for a Client: At the start of his pre-trial hearing, Jeffrey Hudson fires his lawyer and decides to represent himself. Even in spite of this, she helps him out at the end by slashing Det. Ransone's throat and freeing him from custody.
  • Amoral Attorney: Jeffrey's lawyer proves herself as this by not only slashing Det. Ransone’s throat, but freeing him from Lou's care. She even defends him and his actions when Athena confronts her. It's not clear how much of her actions are due to Jeffery's manipulations, or out of genuine spite against the law.
  • Automated Automobiles: An electric car is hacked and nearly runs down Athena.
  • Big Blackout: The episode ends with a city wide blackout.
  • Catapult Nightmare: After learning that she is going to be the first witness called for the Jeffrey Hudson trial, Athena has a nightmare where Jeffrey Hudson had broken into her house in the middle of the night, attacked her again before shooting her in the head with her own gun, she wakes up gasping for breath.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with a city wide blackout that has caused a helicopter - that was carrying a heart that is needed for surgery - to miss the landing pad on the top of the hospital and is now teetering on the edge of the building, Det. Lou Ransone’s fate is left unknown after he receives a Slashed Throat and rapist Jeffery Hudson is once again freed as his lawyer comes to his rescue and frees him from the back of Det. Lou Ransone’s car.
  • Coincidental Broadcast: The news informs everyone that the GPS accident was caused by a bug in the most recent update for the app but when Taylor checks Buck’s phone she notices that the last update for the app was over 2 weeks ago.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Maddie is still no longer working at the call centre due to still suffering and dealing with her postpartum.
    • When the emergency alert warnings go off on everyone’s phones, everyone receives a different alert and all the alerts are disasters the 118 have all dealt with before. Chimney even points out that fact, stating that it’s all their greatest hits.
Bobby: Earthquake alert. That's weird. You guys feel anything? ( phone buzzes )
Buck: Uh, m-mine's a tsunami alert. ( phone buzzing )
      Eddie: Mudslide warning.
Chimney: It's like our greatest hits.
    • Athena attends the pre-trial hearing of Jeffrey Hudson, a serial rapist and the man that attacked her and nearly beat her to death.
    • At the pre-trial hearing, in order to discredit Athena’s testimony Jeffrey Hudson brings up her previous actions against the teenage girl that pushed May to attempt suicide.
  • Computer Virus: A group of hackers based out of Asia proceed to destroy Los Angeles and other states's computer systems, causing mass chaos and fatalities for personal and monetary gain. With their attacks compared to The End of the World as We Know It by everyone.
  • Conveniently Timed Distraction: Jeffrey Hudson uses the mass confusion caused by the court’s system glitch that brought four other prisoners to the same courtroom to escape in the middle of his own pre-trial. He walks out the front doors with Athena hot on his trail.

  • Foreshadowing: When Chimney is feeding Jee-Yun her breakfast the preschool song “Willaby Wallaby Woo” is playing. The song is about an elephant, later on the 118 deal with some escaped zoo animals, one which happens to be an elephant.
  • How We Got Here: After the opening scene, where the 118 crew walks down a deserted main street where they discover all the animals from the zoo have escaped, the episode starts 1 week before the events happen.
  • Meet the In-Laws: Eddie is meeting all of Ana’s extended family at her sister’s baby christening. Everyone tells Eddie that must mean their relationship is getting very serious, but he doesn’t see it that way.
  • Monster Fangirl: Serial rapist Jeffrey Hudson has numerous of these at his pre-trial hearing.
  • Multipart Episode: First episode of a three-episode arc.
  • Repression Never Ends Well: Eddie believes in moving forward after his Near-Death Experience after being shot, his doctor believes that he could be repressing his trauma and that could be one of the reasons for his panic attack.

  • There Are No Therapists: Averted Maddie is seeing a therapist to help deal with her postpartum depression.
  • Time Skip: This episode is set four months after the events of Survivors
  • Trapped in a Sinking Car: After her car’s GPS leads her to turn off the docks and into the water, Kirby is trapped in her car as it sinks to the bottom river. She needs fire rescue to get her out. Not least, because the same GPS system sends another car crashing on top of hers, to begin sinking as well.
