Recap / Nine One One Lone Star S 3 E 15 Down To Clown

Go To

Owen returns to anger management therapy to find the root of his anger. Both Grace & Judd, and TK & Carlos welcome unexpected visitors into their homes.

Tropes featured in this episode include:

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Owen's biggest fears - his cancer, his son dying, and clowns.
  • Body Horror: The survivalist who tries to film himself hunting an alligator lizard ends up stabbing his own leg, with said lizard hiding inside the puncture wound. It takes Tommy poking around and letting it bite her finger to remove it.
  • Breather Episode: After the additional drama surrounding the Strands? Yup, a wild lizard, a loveably annoying roommate, and setbacks to overcoming a fear of clowns is kinda par the course for a break.
  • Cliffhanger:
  • Deer in the Headlights: When reporting to a birthday party to free a clown from a rotting playground structure, Owen ends up freezing in fear until the clown is transferred onto a gurney.
  • It's All My Fault: After failing to help a man get out of a burning room, Dave spends the bulk of the episode in guilt for his death. Not even learning that the blueprints for the room were outdated makes him feel any better.
  • Jump Scare: Played for Laughs with Carlos finding Lou on his shoulder and jumping up in fear, which knocks the lizard off.
  • Lethally Stupid: The survivalist attempting to catch the alligator lizard might be familiar with the species, but he’s definitely not in the know about to catch one.
  • Off Screen Moment Of Awesome: While TK is on shift, Carlos turns the living room upside down keeping up the search for Lou, and succeeds in both retrieving the lizard and keeping it inside the tank (and also not killing it at any point).
  • Oh, Crap!: TK when he notices the empty fish tank, then finds that Lou got onto the couch and onto Carlos’ shoulder. Which then leads into a Mass "Oh, Crap!" when Carlos turns his gaze onto his right shoulder.
  • Social Media Before Reason: When he’s being heaved into the ambulance, the survivalist is more concerned about his viewership than the fact that he’s been badly injured and really should consider pursuing another gimmick.
  • Something Only They Would Say: And know, in the birthday party call. Over the course of the rescue, the clown is revealed to be a divorced dad who wanted to attend his young son’s party without breaking a restraining order from his wife; one of the things that gives him away is immediately knowing his son’s favorite animal (which he tries to pass off as a lucky guess at first).
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Not intentionally (bless his soul) when Dave learns his apartment has to have a water leak fixed for the week and ask Judd and Grace to stay longer at their house. But while Dave’s presence is sometimes helpful (i.e. being a fun and reliable babysitter to Charlie, and driving Grace to the call center on their shifts), his blunt antics start wearing at Grace’s patience.
  • Too Much Information: Carlos is already reluctant to have a wild lizard in the loft when TK shows it to him. Hearing that said lizard was removed from a man’s leg wound in the field makes him even less eager to consider it a pet.
