Recap / New Girl S 6 E 22

Go To

"Five Stars for Beezus" is the 22nd episode and finale of New Girl's sixth season.

Jess returns to LA intending to confess to Nick, but a misunderstanding causes her to believe he doesn't think they'll ever work, and so she resolves to move out of the loft.

Meanwhile, Nick meets with a publisher, Winston resolves to call his father, and Schmidt and Cece get some big news.

Tropes in this episode:

  • The Big Damn Kiss: After spending the entire episode trying to either avoid or get ahold of each other, Jess and Nick reunite in their apartment elevator at the very end. The doors close... and when they reopen they are furiously making out. The whole thing is triumphantly set to Lorde's "Green Light".
  • Call-Back: Schmidt refers to Cece being pregnant as them having "made a caramel miracle", the same thing he said during their pregnancy scare in "Kids".
  • Continuity Nod: Cece is overjoyed to learn she's pregnant, saying she didn't think it would happen. Her learning she had very few viable eggs left was the inciting incident for her almost marrying Shivrang in Season 2, which had largely been forgotten until now.
  • Grand Romantic Gesture: Schmidt buys a room's worth of flowers when telling Cece she's pregnant.
  • Headbutt of Love: Schmidt and Cece touch foreheads after she learns she's pregnant.
  • Love at First Sight: According to Schmidt, Nick has been in love with Jess since he first laid eyes on her.
  • Offscreen Breakup: When we last saw Sadie and Melissa, they were married and expecting a child. Here a throwaway line from Cece indicates they've since divorced.
  • Poor Communication Kills:
    • Played for laughs: a couple of poorly timed calls from Sadie and Winston's inability to keep a secret result in the other main characters learning that Cece is pregnant before Cece herself.
    • More seriously, a fan at Nick's book reading asks if Pepperwood and Jessica Night (who is based on Jess) will get together. Nick rebukes this notion, saying that he and Jess couldn't work out because they are too different. Jess (who was intending to confess to Nick) leaves in despair after this, missing Nick's follow-up where he admits he blew it.
