"Today is about me finding someone within my own culture that I can build my life with. It’s about more than sex."
Cece

"Table 34" is the sixteenth episode of New Girl's second season.

Nick and Jess try to avoid talking about their kiss, but are forced together when the gang winds up at an Indian marriage convention Cece is attending.

Tropes:

  • Big "WHAT?!": Cece's reaction to the news that Nick and Jess kissed is a hilariously extended "what" that spills into the opening credits.
  • Bollywood Nerd: The episode is set at an Indian marriage convention, and allusions to the stereotype of the smart and successful Indian are made throughout. Sam (who, as a doctor, naturally winds up in the highly desirable Table 1) punches Nick in the throat and Nick asks if there is another doctor in the house.
Nick: Knowing this crowd there should be!
  • Erotic Eating: Conversed. Cece tries to weasel out of Table 34 by telling the organizer she had been the woman slowly catching strawberries in her mouth in Lil Wayne's music video.
  • I'm a Man; I Can't Help It: One way Nick attempts to justify the kiss.
Nick: You have to take a little responsibility, tartin’ around in that little soft pink robe, not expecting to get kissed. I’m a man, Jessica! Pink robes are my catnip!
  • Mrs. Robinson: The head of the marriage convention is a middle-aged woman who hits on the younger Winston.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Cece and Nick wind up at the lowest-ranked table, Table 34, and Cece suspects that for all their differences, they are more alike than they think. They are both impulsive, which lead to them not making the most of their lives.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: Nick and Jess insist that they're not a couple when the moderator compliments their teamwork.
  • Shout-Out: Schmidt's getup is explicitly compared to Zoltar.
  • Speed Dating: Essentially the point of the Indian marriage convention, which introduces various singles and puts them together for team-building activities and compatibility tests.
