Recap / Nancy Drew S 1 E 8 The Path Of Shadows

Go To

Nancy and the Drew Crew discover that the car wreck that left one of their own at death's door was no accident. While simultaneously hoping to solve the crime, the crew investigates the physical evidence of sabotage to the car and take a supernatural detour into the metaphysical world.

Tropes:

  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Bess's determination to be part of the rich family she grew up hoping was always hers led her to be intimately familiar with fashion, meaning she was able to deduce that Lisbeth's online profile is a complete fiction, with fashion choices that weren't available at the times she took the photos in her posts.
  • Bullying a Dragon: At the end of the episode, Lisbeth breaks up with Bess and Nancy confronts her with a What the Hell, Hero?, in front of Celia Hudson, no less, threatening her cover. Nancy pushes it too far, of course, and gets a solid right hook for her troubles, laying her out. However, it's a con! After Lisbeth and Mrs. Hudson drive off, Bess runs over with frozen peas (because Lisbeth really laid into her); they were doing it to preserve her cover.
  • Dirty Cop: Late in the episode, there's a reveal that the last thing Ace saw was the boots of someone cleaning up the crime scene, one of the local police. Because the Drew Crew also get access to the state police through Lisbeth, this is cleaned up very quickly. Rawling is arrested before the end of the episode.
  • Foreshadowing: The Drew family spent the first year of her life out of the country. The reveal late in the season explains why they really did that. Nancy is Lucy's biological daughter, and they needed to cover the lack of pregnancy while they secretly adopted her (whereas, ironically, spending a year in hiding was almost always meant to help hide a Surprise Pregnancy and avoid Slut-Shaming).
  • Info Dump: Chief McGinnis asks the crew what the hell is going on, because someone has been tampering with the spirit world. They then proceed to recap all the supernatural crap they've gone through.
  • Like Father, Like Son: When Nancy calls her dad out for all the illegal things he's done, he responds that she is exactly like him, breaking the law when she thinks it's the right thing to do.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Ace, pothead and hacker, is the son of a cop.
  • Spooky Séance: The Drew Crew does this to get Ace of his coma.
    • Spirit World: George ends up the one who ends up in the spirit realm to find an lost Ace.
  • Papa Wolf: At the chief's spirit circle, each is supposed to take a totem; Carson chooses the wolf.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Despite some waffling in earlier episodes, it's confirmed that Chief McGinnis actually is one, he does respect Nancy, and it turns out he loves Ace like part of the family.
  • The Reveal:
    • Turns out McGinnis has known Ace since he was a young boy and is a close friend of the family, loves him as part of the family. The deal where Ace works for him wasn't a deal between Ace and McGinnis, it was between McGinnis and the feds to save him.
    • Lisbeth is undercover with the state police, who think the Hudsons have someone on the payroll.
