Milius and Tennant continue to work together in the aftermath of the disastrous prisoner exchange. Ernie continues to play mediator between Lucy and Whistler.

- Artistic License – History, in-universe: Charlie says that Tennant is mostly right about Gavrilo Princip, except that the famous assassin felt no remorse about murdering the archduke and starting World War I. "I like my version better," Tennant replies.
- Call-Back: Commander Kelley ends up dying on the plane and everyone on the plane is called into question, despite them having special clearances. This is a reference to the 'Spies' two-parter, where Jane's old friend Maggie was a spy yet managed to get such clearance.
- False Flag Operation: Alexi Babin planned one to heighten the tensions between Russia and the United States. Ironically, the Russian Babin's handler is the Scottish Colin McIntyre.
- The Man Behind the Man: Colin McIntyre orchestrated the events and used Alexi to prolong tensions between Russia and the United States.
- Previously on…: The episode starts with a quick review of what happened in the previous episode, focusing mostly on the prisoner exchange but also devoting a little bit of time to Agent Whistler wanting to win Agent Tara back.
- Season Finale: This episode concludes the show's first season. It was advertised as "season finale, part 2." It feels like it was written to serve as the series finale in case the show was not picked up for a second season, which it was. So instead of a cliffhanger to set up the second season, the whole thing with the Russians is wrapped up with a few minutes to spare for Whistler to serenade Tara and the two of them to kiss and make up as their colleagues watch and applaud.
- Shout-Out: When interrogating Alina, Lucy compares her to Black Widow.
- Speak in Unison: While investigating an abandoned warehouse full of explosives, Jesse steps onto a pressure plate. Kai refuses to leave, and Boom-Boom the bomb technician says he appreciates the love they show for each other.Jesse and Kai: "Love" is a strong word.
- Take a Third Option: Commander Chase debriefs Lucy on where the poison could have been administered. On the plane, tarmac, or both.
- Walk and Talk: Boone, Holman and Tara are walking around the marina discussing the case before "Black Widow" attacks and her accomplice gets away.
