- Bodily Fluid Blacklight Reveal: The chop shop has a room, and one of the walls has a bullet hole. Lucy turns off the lights and shines a flashlight around it.
- Boom, Headshot!: Dr. Chase points out that the victim was shot in the face. An overhead image shows the fractured skull.
- Chekhov's Skill: Lani tells Jesse and Kai about the J-turn. Jesse uses it against her later.
- Continuity Nod to "Ohana": It is said that Whistler "went full Adele" when she serenaded Tara to get her back in that earlier episode.
- Disability Alibi: Lani's ex-boyfriend and uncle are immediately ruled out when the former wheezes due to an allergy to chemicals, which were sampled from the execution room, and the latter is bedridden and terminal with cancer. The ex-boyfriend's prints were all over the chop shop, except that one room.

- Improvised Weapon: The ex-boyfriend uses a crowbar to swing at Jesse and Kai when the two try to arrest him.
- Nightmare Fuel: In-Universe, Jesse describes the hand sticking out of the trunk exactly as such.
- Shout-Out: To The Fast and the Furious, which Kai has never seen until later offscreen. Jesse is a fan and is elated when Kai says, "I don't have friends, I have ohana."
