Recap / My Little Pony 'n Friends E31: "The Magic Coins 1"

Go To

The kids and the seaponies are having a picnic by the river, and as the seaponies play around in the water they discover a sunken treasure chest, which they bring to the surface. The ponies begin a game of volleyball using one of Fizzy's bubbles, which sees the chest being upset when a player runs into it and ends when Gusty's horn pops the ball. Fizzy magics up another, wishing as she does to be able to make stronger and bigger bubbles, and she says this she steps on a coin and it vanishes.

Fizzy attempt to make a new ball produces a slew of gigantic bubbles, one of which proves large enough to carry Molly off into the sky. After Megan and Wind Whistler rescue her, another wish results in the creation of a mountain of food and they realize that the coins grant limited wishes. Seeing that each coin has a symbol stamped on it, they realize that these represent the wishes the coins can grant.

A rainstorm soon breaks out, forcing the ponies to abandon their picnic. After Baby Lickety-Split wishes that it would never rain again, the storm suddenly clears. The long-term effects of this wish soon become apparent as the rain ceases entirely and Ponyland turns into a desert. Megan decides to use the other coins to reverse the disaster, but some have already been used — resulting in Sweet Stuff getting stuck in clown makeup, among other things — and none of the remaining coins seem suitable for fixing this mess. They decide to go to Mr. Moochick for help, and on the way find the seaponies stranded in a dried riverbed. Wind Whistler gloomily predicts that they will not live long without water, and the group splits; Megan takes one part to the Moochick, and Danny goes with the other to bring the seaponies to a pond Whizzer found.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: The wishes from the magic coins can backfire quite severely if made incautiously. Fizzy wishes for the ability to make large and strong bubbles, but these turn out to be too strong for her to control. Baby Lickety-Split wishes for it to never rain again, causing all rain to disappear and Dream Valley to turn into a desert.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Ponyland's drought is caused by Baby Lickety-Split's wish, which she made because the rain was going to spoil a picnic they were having.
  • Karma Houdini: Baby Lickety-Split isn't called out for anything, even when she says she's the one who wished that it would never rain again, and isn't seen again for the rest of the four-parter.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: After a rainstorm ruins the ponies' picnic, an upset Baby Lickety-Split angrily wishes that it would never rain again. Unknown to her, this is said within hearing range of a powerful wish-granting artifact, and what would normally have only been idle venting with no further impact creates a devastating drought.
