Jessica visits her nephew Johnny, recently recruited onto a Major League Baseball team, and then must solve the murder of a scheming news reporter.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Big Secret:
    • Charley Holcombe used to be known as Freddy Masters before he jumped bail and changed his identity to escape after being picked out of a line-up during an assault case.
    • Pete Briggs snuck out of barracks after curfew to see a hypnotist so as to improve his game.
    • Mike Warlop didn't spend a season sitting out of games to heal a shoulder injury; he spent it getting treatment for his alcoholism at a private clinic.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • Jessica finds a piece of glass in Loretta's hotel room. It turns out to be a piece of the killer's glasses.
    • Mr. Sidell tells Jessica that he wrecked his car going around a turn the night of the murder. He couldn't see because his glasses had been broken as he struggled with Loretta.
  • Death by Falling Over: During their scuffle, Mr. Sidell hits Loretta, knocking her into the dresser and causing a fatal head injury. He tries to cover it up by making it look like she surprised a burglar in her hotel room.
  • Going for the Big Scoop: Loretta Lee, the murdered reporter, had a great amount of ambition and it ultimately got her killed when she planned to spill a compromising story on one of the players.
  • I Didn't Mean to Kill Him: Mr. Sidell tells Jessica and Lt. Caceras that he didn't intend to kill Loretta Lee. After confirming her suspicions about Charley Holcombe, she tried to call the story in to the networks or the DA, only caring about the glory she would obtain from cracking the case and not how it would impact Charley or Siddell. The two struggled and he hit her, accidentally toppling her into the dresser.
  • Ironic Echo Cut: Johnny cheerfully predicts that the Comets will play terrifically with Jessica there to watch. Their opponent proceed to gain a seven-to-none lead over them.
  • Malicious Misnaming: One of the baseball players kept referring to Jessica "Aunt Mitty", a Candy striper.
  • You Look Familiar: Todd Bryant, playing Johnny Eaton (Jessica's other nephew), is a well known stunt performer, and is best known for Star Trek fans as the Klingon Captain Klaa in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.
