Recap / Motherland Fort Salem S 3 E 2 The Price Of Work

Go To

At a drilling site in Southern Iran, Alban Hearst is shown an auger bit that got eaten up when it tried to drill into the Mycelium. Another attempt is made with a platinum bit, and it is successful. This allows for fungicide to be injected into the Mycelium under Alban Hearst's supervision. Mushrooms sprout but die almost immediately. Hearst is very pleased.

Raelle and Scylla look for a boat to steal, while Abigail and Adil (invisible thanks to the latter's Work) serve as lookouts. Nicte gripes about working with so many couples. As for Khalida, she misses having others her own age from her time with the Dodgers. Raelle and Scylla finally find a suitable boat and talk about someday going off together. They do this within Abigail's earshot.

At Fort Salem, Izadora plays a recording of Penelope Silver singing at church. It starts raining a black thick liquid and they collect samples.

M and Anacostia discuss Kara Brandt and how Alban Hearst and VP Silver defer to her. They have doubts about President Wade's loyalties. M proposes having Sterling put M on Wade's security detail.

At the Cession border, the group sneaks in when the wards (magical protective fields) are lifted to allow a car to pass. They discuss evading the Marshals, because if they get caught, they will be extradited back to the U.S.

In her lab, Izadora takes the samples of rain she has collected and uses them to reconstitute a confused Penelope Silver. Izadora tells her she's home and in response, Penelope lunges at her neck.

Somewhere within the Cession , the group has set up camp. Scylla reports that Raelle is not feeling great and is sleeping in. She is set to take the truck into town for supplies and to check in with Anacostia, but Abigail is not trusting her after overhearing her make plans to run off with Raelle. They bicker, with Nicte pitching in, until Tally tells them to shut up so they don't wake Raelle.

While Tally and Nicte are away from the rest, Nicte tells Tally that she can change the world with her Sight powers, "but Work like that comes at a price." She stresses that it should not be used irresponsibly and that she herself paid a terrible price. Tally dismisses her words, saying that even Nicte's face is a lie. Defiantly, Nicte burns off her current face and reveals her real face, ravaged by burn scars and scars left by deep wounds that are 30 years old. "IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT?"

Petra discusses with Anacostia the dinner she will be hosting with for the Washington Historical Society, which Wade and Silver will be attending. Silver wants to pass a bill that would serious limit the rights of witches. Petra wants to know if Wade is on their side. Sterling has arranged for M to be placed in Wade's security detail. They talk about the fungicide drills and making sure that Izadora knows. There is a chemical plant in the Cession where the fungicide is manufactured. They debate having the Council of the Great River investigate. The Council has witches in it, so it would be in their interests to investigate if the Camarilla is involved. As risky as it would be, they consider using Abigail and the rest to gather intel.

Abigail asks Adil if he has ever heard of something called the "union of earth and sky", which her mother heard about in Fort Salem. He has never heard about it, but apparently, the Camarilla are trying to stop it. When asked, Khalida claims that it is something the Camarilla made up to justify their hate.

At a clothing store, Scylla grabs several outfits and goes off to the changing room to pretend to try them on. In reality, she is communicating with Anacostia through the mirror to let her know they are in the Cession. Anacostia lets her know about the Mycelium being poisoned and instructs them to survey the plant where the fungicide is made.

Cut to the group's camp. Scylla is running in, calling for Raelle. She knows why Raelle has been sick. Scylla runs to their tent and finds Raelle being swallowed up by the ground. She tries to take Raelle's hand and pull her out, but Raelle can only manage an "I love you" before sinking in completely.

Later on, Scylla tells the others not to worry; the Mycelium has taken in Raelle to heal her. She also tells her about Petra wanting them to check out a chemical plant. If they can stop what they are doing at the plant, "Raelle and the Mycelium might be able to heal." Khalida offers to stay at the camp in case Raelle returns. In the meantime, they go off to the plant.

At the dinner Petra hosts for the Washington Historical Society, President Wade, VP Silver and Kara are on the guest list. Petra has her mother Minerva (who herself has been holding up a grudge of her own with the President) help get a sample of Wade's voice. During dinner, Silver brings up the bill he has been working up to address witches' rights, which includes restrictions to voting rights. Wade chooses that moment to make it clear that she will never sign such a bill, as she will defend the civil rights of ALL Americans, witches and civilians.

Anacostia and Petra are relieved that Wade is not on the side of the Camarilla, but now they are worried that she has painted a target on her back.

The gang heads off to the plant that manufactures the fungicide and work together to blow it up and even apprehend Alban Hearst, who mouths off asking about "blondie". When the gang returns from their mission, they realize that the Marshals are there. Adil tries his invisibility Work, but the Marshal's whistle breaks it down. Adil and the others run off, trying to evade the Marshals.

Raelle wakes up in the Mycelium. And her mother Willa is there. She announces that Raelle is sick and will be taken care of by her mother.

Tropes used

  • Adventures in Comaland: After being absorbed by the poisoned Mycelium, Raelle wakes up in her bedroom, with her mother, Willa announcing she will take care of her daughter. Willa's Slasher Smile indicates that something is wrong.
  • Bad Liar: Abigail asks Adil and Khalida if they have ever heard of "the union of earth and sky" that the Camarilla seek to prevent. Khalida says very quickly and nervously that it sounds like something they made up to justify their hate.
  • Call-Back: In S2E01 "Of The Blood", Penelope Silver sang "How Great Thou Art" in church and her voice melted stained glass windows. Here, Izadora plays a recording of Penelope's singing, inducing the same black rain from last episode.
  • The Ditz: Kara Brandt attempts to invoke this at the dinner party, pretending to be confused by Petra having three fathers for her child. She lays it on too thick to convince Petra or Anacostia.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Kara gets Abigail's three fathers mixed up at first. And in private with Silver, they suggest those men should have numbers, like it doesn't matter to them which is Claude or Fermin. It also gives an ugly air of "All X people look alike to me".
  • Facial Horror: Nicte defiantly shows her true face to Tally. It has some ragged wounds and scars.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: To get an unadulterated sample of President Wade's voice, Petra asks her mother (who has a grudge against Wade) to have a private talk. The talk is offscreen, but both women come out looking like they got some closure.
Minerva: Kelly and I were rising through the ranks at the same time. A witch and a civilian. Both Black women and both a little stubborn. (chuckles) And at the time, neither of us could see that we had far more in common than not. But we've put that to bed tonight.
  • Oh, Crap!: The Cession's Marshals have managed to find the group's hideout. Adil makes this face when one of the Marshals manages to No-Sell Adil's invisibility spell.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: Abigail tosses a "Remember me?" to Hearst before knocking him out.
  • Rain of Something Unusual: It is deliberately triggered by Izadora playing a recording of Penelope's voice so she can take a sample of the black rain.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Wade announces that if any bill comes up that curtails the rights of any Americans (witches or civilians) she will veto it. This proves to Anacostia and Petra that Wade is not on the side of the Camarilla. The relief is short-lived, as Wade now has a target in her back.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Abigail is distrustful of Scylla and disdainful of Spree founder Nicte. Nicte is disdainful of taking orders from the army. Tally grows tired of the bickering and tells them to knock it off.
  • Wham Shot:
    • The samples of black rain are turned to gas in Izadora's lab, and the gas takes the shape of Penelope Silver.
    • Raelle is swallowed up by the ground after the Mycelium is injected with poison.
