Recap / Monkie Kid S 2 E 6 Game On

Go To

In a desperate search to unlock a new, powerful ability, MK dives into a Virtual-Reality game emulating Monkey King’s old adventures which he hopes will gave him answers to the strength that he wants.

Tropes:

  • An Aesop:
    • Don't just rush into the action without a plan.
    • As Monkey King words it, not every fight is settled with brute force. After losing to Rhino King several times, he learns to rely on both Active and Passive skills in both the game and real life.
  • Fanservice: The art depicting Monkey King throughout the VR game is…interesting. It’s especially hilarious when you consider he made the game himself.
  • Mythology Gag: The entire VR game acts as a simulation to the original Journey To The West.
    • We get to see video game depictions of Monkey King’s fellow pilgrims and old friends in the Journey, and it’s lampshaded that they all share the appearances and same voice actors as their current counterparts.
    • Monkey King's master, the pacifistic monk Tang Sanzang, gets a characteristically exasperated reaction to MK choosing offensive abilities over passive ones.
  • The Scottish Trope: Following his encounter with Lady Bone Demon, MK is unable to disclose her name to his friends. Whether he is compelled not to or is too shaken, he only says that he needs to be strong enough to take on the next "big bad".
  • Shout-Out:
MK: Is it true that if I die in here, I die in real life?!
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: Humorously discussed when MK worries fearfully questions if dying in the game means dying in real life. Mei assures him otherwise before quietly confiding in Sandy that she actually doesn't know. Thankfully averted, especially considering the sheer number of times he died in-game.
