Ladybug and Cat Noir. Your frozen statues will sparkle like trophies upon my kingdom of ice!

"Frozer, I am Hawk Moth. They want to take your rink away from you, so from now on all of Paris will be your ice kingdom! In return, you must bring me Ladybug and Cat Noir's Miraculous."
Hawk Moth

Marinette and Adrien decide they're having little luck with their respective crushes, so they go on a double date with Luka and Kagami, respectively. Meanwhile, Phillipe, manager of the ice rink, is threatened with losing his job and becomes the ice villain Frozer.

Tropes:

  • Better as Friends: Marinette is beginning to wonder if she and Adrien are this, since she can only successfully talk to him when it's as a friend.
  • Blatant Lies: When Kagami asks Adrien if he invited the others because he was afraid of being alone with her he denies it. Saying he needs Marinette's help with his figure skating.
  • Book Ends: The episode starts and ends with one of protagonists trying to reveal their love only to reveal that it's a Daydream Surprise.
  • Camp Straight: Philippe is incredibly flamboyant, expressing his emotions loudly and with exaggerated gestures, not to mention his earrings. In Real Life, he is married to a woman with whom he has three kids.
  • Celebrity Star: Philippe Candeloro/Frozer (played by Philippe Candeloro in the French dub).
  • Character Development: For both our heroes.
    • Marinette: Successfully keeps her jealousy in check throughout the entire episode, continuing the trend from Riposte.
    • Adrien: Asking for help when he realizes he doesn't know what to do about Kagami.
  • Daydream Surprise: During the opening scene, Cat Noir reveals to Ladybug that he's Adrien so they can finally be together but it turns out it was just his imagination. The same thing happens towards the end, when Marinette finally reveals her feelings to Adrien.
  • Exact Words: Adrien tell his father that he has private lessons with Kagami, but he doesn't specify that it's skating, not a fencing lesson (not to mention a date).
  • Fake-Out Opening: After saving a man on a hang-glider, Cat Noir allows his miraculous to power-down, revealing who he is to Ladybug... only to reveal that it was just in his head.
  • Harmless Freezing: With the exception of Ladybug and Cat Noir, Frozer encases all of Paris in ice, including its citizens. It is safe to presume that they were all fine after Ladybug reversed the damage, or else this show just got a lot darker.
  • Hope Spot: A rather sad one for Marinette when Adrien asks for her advice on dating Kagami. He words it in a way that makes it sound like he's interested in her, and she's heartbroken when she realizes the mistake.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy:
    • Marinette tries to do this when she thinks Adrien has fallen for Kagami but is obviously miserable whenever she sees them together.
    • Luka was also implied to have pulled this at the end of the episode.
  • An Ice Person: Frozer covers all of Paris in ice just by skating around and can shoot icicles from his skates.
  • An Ice Suit: Ladybug and Cat Noir's costumes get snowflake-themed outfits when their kwamis eat proper Power-Up Food.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While Mayor Bourgeois' reason to want to close the ice rink, to make a gym for ChloĆ©, is selfish, his financial excuse for doing so is solid. Phillipe hasn't had any students in a year and the mayor even gives Phillipe a chance to overturn the decision if he can get a single student in ten minutes. He doesn't even get in Phillipe's way until he tries to force the four kids to join.
  • Just Friends: Said verbatim by Adrien. Again. Although Plagg's argument for it being otherwise is surprisingly observant.
  • Kick the Dog: Kagami essentially tells Marinette that because she can't admit her feelings for Adrien, Kagami will win him instead. It might have been meant as Tough Love, but it could also come across as taunting, not helped by the way Kagami whispers it in Marinette's ear and smirks as she skates away with Adrien:
"The only reason you can't stay on your feet is your hesitation. I never hesitate."
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: When the other girls try and tell Marinette to find an excuse not to go with Adrien to the ice-rink to help ask out Kagami, she decides to go anyway because she believes that at this point, she'll never get around to asking him and that she would feel more comfortable with him if they just stayed friends.
  • Love Hurts: For both our protagonists.
    • After trying again to romance Ladybug as Cat Noir and again being turned down, Adrien wonders if he should give up on her and try someone else like Kagami. This leads to him asking Marinette for romantic advice.
    • Marinette actually suffers this worse than Adrien as due to his wording, she at first thinks that Adrien has developed a crush on her only to reveal he is talking about Kagami. She decides to help him as she tries to convince herself they're better as friends while visibly miserable whenever Kagami and Adrien are close.
  • Master of the Mixed Message: In this episode, Adrien wonders if he should give up on Ladybug and so decides to go out with Kagami and asks Marinette for help. While at the skating rink he ditches Kagami during their date two times prior to the akuma — when Marinette falls down while skating (despite Luka already being closer) and then when he sees Marinette goes to the bathroom. As Plagg puts it:
"You're supposed to be in love with Ladybug, now you're ditching Kagami for Marinette?"
  • Moment Killer: Phillipe's desperate attempts to sign someone for his skating lessons interrupt several moments between Marinette and Luka.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Kagami is heavily implied to believe that Adrien has a crush on Marinette. Which is technically true.
  • Romantic Runner-Up: Adrien and Marinette both deciding to continue pursuing their respective crushes make Kagami and Luka this. They're both very understanding, in their own way.
  • Rule of Three: When in need of romantic advice, Adrien considers askng Gorilla, Nathalie, and his father but each time he changes his mind.
  • Ship Tease: When Adrien looks around the school, the shot shows a few Official Couples but also Juleka with Rose and Nathaniel with Marc.
  • Status Quo Is God: Neither Marinette nor Adrien abandon their crushes, nor do they reveal their secrets.
  • Unspoken Plan Guarantee: After her Lucky Charm generates a bag of salt, Ladybug whispers some instructions to Cat Noir which the audience can't hear, then leads Frozer into a trap that Cat Noir sets up.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Marinette, Adrien, Luka, and Kagami all turn down Phillipe's offer of skating lessons, which precipitates his transformation into Frozer when Mayor Bourgeois decides to close the ice rink because he's not getting any business.
  • Verbal Backspace:
    • When Adrien tells Marinette that he needs advice for a date with Kagami, she calls her "ice queen" but she quickly says that she meant he should take her to the "ice rink".
    • Later, Mayor Bourgeois mentions that he's planning to turn the ice rink into a gym for his daughter, err, for Paris.
  • Victory Fakeout: Marinette professes her love to Adrien at the end of the episode... only for her to have imagined it.
