With the destruction of Skullmaster's Crystal of Souls, Lava Lord, the original ruler of the center of the Earth, comes back to life and starts plotting revenge.
Meanwhile, Max is getting tired of being the Mighty One and tries to give the cap back to Virgil the next time he's summoned. Virgil agrees he'll leave Max alone if they complete one more quest to get rid of Skullmaster once and for all while he's vulnerable from losing the source of his power. As soon as they get down to the center of the Earth, Virgil's captured, and not long after Max finds his friend leading Skullmaster's forces.
Seems there's a prophecy that Skullmaster and Virgil will die together, and Virgil's agreed to team up to try to thwart destiny.
Tropes:
- I Just Want to Be Normal: Max tries to give back the cap and go back to being a regular kid.
- Kill It with Water: A pair of rock monsters are shown torturing lava beasts by spraying them with water hoses to keep them working on their project. Two of them are completely extinguished, presumably killed.
- No Ontological Inertia: With the Crystal of Souls destroyed, the thing Skullmaster presumably used to petrify him in the first place, Lava Lord awakens and takes back rulership of the lava beasts.
