A Proud Warrior

Original Airdate: November 8, 2020
Written by: Ayumi Shimo
Directed by: Hiroyuki Kato

Summary:

With Hakobu and Oradin back, it seems that the team continues to grow and grow. This leads to the team thinking that they may need more people on their side to balance things out, which seems to trigger something in Muryo. When called out to fight off a new Jamenshi, Juru tries to call upon the Go Kiramai Arrow, only for it to seemingly not come. Instead, it's in Muryo's hands, which leads Takamichi to believe that he's trying to become the 7th Kiramager!

Tropes:

  • A Day in the Limelight: A mild version. This episode puts more focus on why Muryo is important to the team and how he came to be, but he doesn't get a massive amount of screentime in this one.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Most of the episode implies that Muryo was attempting to become the 7th Kiramager, Kiramai Gold, through modifying the Kiraful Go Arrow. Turns out Muryo is fully aware his true talent lies in being Mission Support and he wasn't trying to be an active warrior at all; he was only modifying it to be able to communicate with and summon Mashin Oradin from Atamald.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Downplayed. Takamichi's assumption that Muryo was planning to transform into a Kiramager with the Kiraful Go Arrow and his subsequent insistance for the others to not summon it puts the team in a great jeopardy and disadvantage against the powered-up Mannequin Jamen. Thankfully, Muryo's modifications to it were finished just in time; the only change was that it can now summon Mashin Oradin from Atamald, Muryo had never intended to use it to become a Kiramager himself.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: To the 1962 black-and-white film The Proud Challenge (誇り高き挑戦/Hokori takaki chosen).
  • Put on a Bus: Of sorts. Both girls get taken out of commission when they get frozen by the Jamenshi.
  • The Reveal: As Takamichi was coming in and out of consciousness, he was only able to capture the last part of Oradin's and Muryo's conversation, leading to him thinking that Muryo was trying to become the 7th Kiramager. Later on the episode, we see the full extent of their conversation, as Muryo gives a bunch of gifts and manga to the departing Oradin. Oradin thinks that he has the potential to become a warrior, but Muryo rejects that, so instead Oradin makes a pact with him which is how we get to present day Muryo.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Skewed Priorities: Sena's last thought before she gets frozen? Looking cute as a mannequin.
  • Special Edition Title: This week's ED for the "Kiramai Music Festival" has Muryo singing his character song Hakase Janai Yo, Hakata Da Yo! Shikamo Minami Da Yo!.
