Recap / M*A*S*H S7 E6: None Like it Hot

Go To

The 4077th is experiencing a heat wave. Hawkeye and B.J. purchase a bathtub to cool down in, but they struggle to keep it a secret from the rest of the camp. A 'scrounger' from the Quartermaster corps shows up and tries to trade for it. Klinger endeavors to prove he's crazy this time by dressing up in layers as though it were winter. Meanwhile, Radar needs to get his tonsils out.

Attention, all personnel! Sergeant Rhoden has offered the following tropes in exchange for the Pierce/Hunnicutt bathtub:

  • Comically Small Demand: When Rhoden is outplayed by Hawkeye and B.J., he jokes that in World War 2, he would have bargained them down to "a can of Spam." As he drives off, Hawkeye adds "And a can of Spam!" to the deal.
  • Continuity Nod: Radar's tonsils finally come out, after having been mentioned several times over the course of the series.
  • Heat Wave: The camp experiences one, which drives two of the three plots going on this week.
  • Hope Spot: One for Klinger, who finally comes up with a Section 8 routine that Potter can get behind.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: From Some Like It Hot.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Sergeant Rhoden is well aware of his reputation and apparently enjoys it.
Hawkeye: Ah, Sergeant Rhoden, of Sears and Rhoden. Offers a large variety of contraband even if he has to sell his own mother to get it.
Rhoden: [grinning] You've read my brochure.
  • Right on Queue: Once word gets out, people end up waiting in line to use the Pierce/Hunnicutt bathtub, with the usual antics. It's later repeated with Radar's ice cream.
  • Serious Business: Pvt. Igor has orders to shoot anyone who exceeds their 10 minute allotment for the tub.
  • Sexy Coat Flashing: The way Klinger shows off his rubber reducing suit (sweatsuit) to Potter and Radar looks like this, complete with Double Entendre dialogue.
    Radar: WOW!
Klinger: I know, right? You don't see one of these every day.
Potter: Klinger, I must admit, I am impressed!
  • Shady Scalper: Played with. Sergeant Rhoden is an expert at getting things for people in what are probably not entirely legal (or at least not regulation) ways, but he is honest, and makes a point of abiding by the terms of his deals.
  • The Tonsillitis Episode: Radar gets tonsillitis in this episode.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Potter declares that he will give Klinger his Section 8 if he can keep wearing all his winter layers for the next twenty-four hours. In the end, Klinger gives in when he only had an hour left to go. Potter is actually disappointed that he didn't make it.
