Recap / Martha Speaks S 1 E 6 Codename Martha

Go To

Helen goes into the supermarket and has a clingy Martha wait outside. After an encounter with a baby, she sees two men, one of whom mentions "taking candy from a baby". Thinking the men are going to literally steal a baby's candy, she tries to run after them, but is leashed. Helen exits, then Martha tells her that they need to "stop a crime". She leads Helen to an empty store where the men are and thinks they robbed it, but Helen explains that the store closed down.

The men approach Helen, who explains the situation, then asks if they're opening a new store. They claim so, but one man claims it sells plumbing, and the other claims it sells flowers, and the first tries to claim it's a type of irrigation system. When Helen and Martha leave, the latter is suspicious of the two men, even when Helen explains that "taking candy from a baby" is just an expression, since she thinks they sounded as though they were lying.

Later, T.D. visits the Lorraines, and during a game of fetch with Helen and her dogs, he sides with Martha and thinks the men are indeed criminals. T.D. and Martha speculate on what the men could be planning, but Helen thinks they're truly just opening a "plumbing flower shop". However, a radio broadcast does mention two criminals named Louie Kablooie and Jimmy Gimmie plotting a robbery.

Helen, Martha, and T.D. spy on the two men, who talk about robbing a jewellers' shop, causing Martha to decide that they're Louie Kablooie and Jimmy Gimmie. Helen wonders why they're hanging out in an empty store, so T.D. thinks they're planning on digging through the floor of the empty store and tunnelling into the jewellers' shop. He plans to steal their maps and replace them with fake maps so they'll dig into the pool instead and be washed back, and then call the police. Helen points out that the pool is two blocks away, so it'd take weeks to dig there, and suggests just calling the police without swapping the maps. However, Martha thinks they need to present proof.

Helen goes home and retrieves a karaoke machine with a camera so she can record any criminal activity done by the duo. She has T.D. and Martha accompany her, and they record the two men, but people and things keep getting in the way. Then, they try to present this to the police, but accidentally play a video of Helen and Martha singing, "Oh, Where, Oh, Where Has My Little Dog Gone?". Then, when they leave, the police chief talks to the two men, revealing that they're working for him to try to catch the criminals.

Helen and T.D. leave, but Martha, still suspecting the men of being criminals, uses the microphone attached to the karaoke machine to tell them to come out with their hands up. They exit and glare at her, then the police chief explains that the two guys (named Officers O'Reilly and Manetty) are police officers.

While Martha is feeling guilty about her mistake, and O'Reilly and Manetty are planning on giving up, Louie Kablooie shows up. Martha barks and howls, alerting other dogs, who growl at Louie Kablooie and Jimmy Gimmie (now carrying bags of jewels), then Martha has two of them (Rinty and Cisco) take the jewels to the police. That evening, the thieves' arrest appears on the news.

This episode provides examples of

  • Bound and Gagged: T.D. plans on tying the criminals up as part of his plan to stop them.
  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: When Manetty claims the store sells plumbing and O'Reilly claims it sells flowers, Manetty tries to claim that they're selling irrigation devices.
  • Continuity Nod: Skits's enjoyment of catching flying things mentioned in "Martha and Skits" is alluded to when he catches a frisbee several times.
  • Death Glare: Officers O'Reilly and Manetty frown at Martha when she talks to them with the karaoke machine.
  • Delayed Reaction: When the two men mention "taking candy from a baby", Martha says, "Mmm, candy!", before realising that they mentioned taking it from a baby (not realising it was just an expression.)
  • Dramatic Irony: The news guy doesn't know who Martha is, and he thinks her name is just a codename.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite coveting a baby's cookie, Martha wouldn't steal food from a baby.
  • Fat and Skinny:
    • Officer Manetty is lanky, while O'Reilly is chubby.
    • Louie Kablooie is stocky, while Jimmy Gimmie is very skinny, though unlike most examples, the skinny one is the dumb one.
  • Irony: Helen, Martha, and T.D. thought the two men were criminals, but they were actually police.
  • Kid Detective: Subverted. Helen and T.D. try to investigate the robbery, but they track the wrong guys.
  • Literal-Minded: Not only does Martha take things literally as normal, but Jimmy Gimmie is literal-minded too, wondering why he didn't get cake after hearing the expression "a piece of cake", and wondering if he has BO upon hearing that "something smells fishy".
  • Meaningful Name: One robber is named Jimmy Gimmie.
  • Mistaken for Thief: Double-subverted. Martha overhears two men mentioning "taking candy from a baby". She assumes they're planning to actually do this, but it's only an expression... but then it seems as though they're planning to steal jewellery... but they're not; they're police officers trying to catch the actual thieves.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Martha feels guilty for mistaking police officers for thieves, and for getting slobber on Helen's karaoke machine.
  • No Animals Allowed: Martha is displeased at the fact that pets aren't allowed in the supermarket.
  • Noodle Incident: According to the police chief, T.D. once thought robots had taken over the toy store because people were wearing robot costumes. It's never revealed why there were people in robot costumes.
  • Nursery Rhyme: Helen recorded a video of herself and Martha singing, "Oh, Where, Oh, Where Has My Little Dog Gone?".
  • Rhyming Names: The thieves are named Louie Kablooie and Jimmy Gimmie.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Subverted. Martha overhears two guys mentioning "taking candy from a baby" and assumes they're thieves. They're not stealing candy, but it seems like they're planning to rob a jewellery store... but they're not, so Martha was entirely wrong after all.
  • Speak in Unison:
    • In T.D.'s imagination, he and Helen say, "It's an expression!" in unison to a Literal-Minded Martha.
    • When Helen asks T.D. and Martha if they want to be her partners, they reply, "Partners!" in unison.
  • Stereo Fibbing: When Helen asks what the guys' new store sells, Manetty says plumbing, and O'Reilly says flowers, causing Manetty to try to combine them.
  • Tempting Fate: O'Reilly and Manetty decide that Louie Kablooie
