• Cannot Tell a Lie: Kelly under the effect of the truth serum.
• Downer Ending: Al ends up with the pair of shoes he sold to the supermodel Dominique breaking her leg on national television, Jefferson (who convinced him to give her the shoes for free in exchange for advertising the store on TV), abandons him, he is liked to be sued/ruined and he ends up walling himself up in the same wall where he first found the shoes.
• Dumbass Has a Point: Kelly correctly points out what horrible jobs both her parents did in raising her.
• Karma Houdini: Jefferson. He's just as culpable as Al is for the supermodel breaking her leg due to the shoddy shoes (and it was his idea to have her name the store on national television for the free publicity in lieu of an actual payment), but since only Al's name is given, no shame or loss of income befalls him and he just walks away after all the patrons abandon the store.
• Kayfabe: Subverted. Jefferson tries to fake an injury after falling through a fake wall, but he drops it once Al points out he has no insurance.
• Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: Al can't remember any good shows from the 70s so he names a show from the 60s (The Avengers) and the 80s (Miami Vice).
• Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
  • The shoes might've been back in style but they were still from the 70s so they do exactly what 20-year-old shoes would do: break.
  • Played with surrounding Peggy's mom's heart attack.
  Peg: It was just a mild heart attack but it caught us all by surprise
  Kelly: Please, Jupiter has moons that weigh less than she does.
• Take That!: To the 70s. Not only does Al talk about how much the hair and fashion of the era sucks, but when the reporter identifies what was popular (the Ford Pinto, Billy Beer and Diff'rent Strokes), his response is a disgusted "Yikes!", as well as his disbelief that Diff'rent Strokes (which was primarily known as a popular 80s show) premiered then.
