Recap / Married With Children S 1 E 5 Have You Driven A Ford Lately

Go To

Al and Steve neglect their wives after buying a Ford Mustang off of one of Kelly's boyfriends.

Episode Tropes:

  • Ambiguous Situation: While the obvious implication is that Kelly's date, Roger, stole the car himself and sold it to Al and Steve to get it off his back, criminals are rarely so inept to drive around in stolen cars that it's possible he bought the car off the thief not knowing it was stolen, and Steve and Al simply made him an offer he couldn't refuse.
  • Auto Erotica: Marcy engages in this with Steve because she feels bad for passing up the chance back in high school. Al and Peg catch her, and she is so humiliated that they don't speak for three weeks.
  • Butt-Monkey: Marcy is on the receiving end of a lot of humiliation, such as guys offering 10 dollars to have sex with her or being caught in the act with Steve.
  • Book Ends: The episode starts and ends with Marcy and Steve taking the Bundys out for dinner and deciding if they want Japanese, Thai, or Moroccan food.
  • Downer Ending: It turns out that the car was stolen, so Steve and Al put all that money in for nothing.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: A lot changed from this episode:
    • Marcy claims that she and Steve are vegetarians; later episodes such as "Hot Off The Grill" and "The Bald And The Beautiful" have them eating meat with no complaint.
    • Peg is actually very level-headed throughout, such as pointing out that if Al and Steve are going to make a purchase without telling them, then they have the right to do the same. She later even convinces Marcy to cut Al and Steve some slack.
    • Peg mentions she chipped in for hotel rooms when she dated in high school, a far cry from the Pretty Freeloader she became in later seasons.
    • Peg chews out Al for spending money they don't have when the opposite would become status quo a season later.
    • Marcy apparently had a realistically decent dating repertoire growing up; later episodes would have her be basically a pariah to men, even back in high school.
    • Never My Fault incarnate Peg accepts the blame for getting Al tasered by the cop because she believed he was an impersonator.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Peg cuts Al and Steve a break for their obsession with the Ford Mustang, pointing out they dated guys because of their cars growing up.
  • Whatever Happened to the Mouse? It's never stated what happened to Roger, who sold Al and Steve the Mustang. Even if he didn't know it was stolen, he'd be legally required to reimburse Al and Steve, something the money-loving Steve would know.
