LC's Sidetrack: Party at the Bones Yard
A year into the past, Luz, Eda and King spend Halloween in a town where a local legend sent chills down their spines...
Tropes that appear in this Chapter:
- Breather Episode: After how "That's the Way the Cookie Crumbles" ended, the sidetrack is definitely more than necessary for the readers. That's not going into the fact that the events of "Eclipse Lake" follow right after this one...
- Call-Forward:
- Back in "The Forest of Fear", Luz claimed she had an encounter with the Headless Horseman once. This chapter reveals how that encounter went.
- Like in "Summerween Fright", people assume King's nothing but a kid in a demon costume.
- The Cameo: Since the chapter is set a year in the past, Brucy only appears in his original, inanimate bat form.
- Casanova Wannabe: Luz ends up being a female case in this territory. Spending the night at a party with other human teenagers means she has a chance to spend some time alone with a boy or girl but they all end in disaster; the first boy mistakes her for a boy, the only girl she hits on has a boyfriend, another guy ignores her and the last boy is a Conspiracy Theorist who's paranoid about being abducted by aliens.
- Eyebrow Waggle: Luz performs this while flirting with a boy named Ray. It doesn't work because he ends up saying the wrong thing to her.
- Halloween Episode: The chapter takes place on Halloween 2011, when the Clawthornes went to the Human Realm to celebrate said holiday rather than celebrated Somhaim in the Demon Realm.
- Lady Looks Like a Dude: Ray mistakes Luz for a boy while she's flirting with him. When she asks him if he thought this, he fumbles to apologize but by then, Luz is off to the next teen.
- Luminescent Blush: Luz sports one when Ray compliments her costume.
- Resolved Noodle Incident: Luz facing off against the Headless Horseman is given more detail as being the result of a trip to Sleepy Hollow.
- The Reveal:
- The previous year, Luz, Eda, and King traveled to Sleepy Hollow to spend Halloween there.
- Maleficent's been hiding out in an abandoned castle in France since Oberon had discarded her like he did the Coachman.
- "Scooby-Doo" Hoax: The Horseman that the Clawthornes encountered is actually the ghost of Brom Bones playing a trick on them.
- Sequel Hook: Meteora makes a deal with Maleficent, and the former informs the mistress of all evil that they're not the only ones that Oberon has wronged.
- Shout-Out:
- Luz is dressed as a member of the Baseball Furies from The Warriors.
- The tour guide that the Clawthornes meet is named Irving, a nod to Washington Irving, who wrote the original short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
- Some of the people at the party are dressed up as Iron Man and Black Widow.
- Luz meets a boy dressed up as one of the The Jonas Brothers and a girl dressed as Sailor Moon from Sailor Moon.
- The entire plot is a reference to The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.
- Whole Episode Flashback: The chapter takes a break from the main storyline and shows the original three Clawthornes on one of their adventures before things got complicated.
- Villain Team-Up: Meteora offers Maleficent a chance at revenge against Oberon for what he's done to them (uprooting Meteora from her life and family, leaving Maleficent behind when he had to join the Order.)
