Chapter 5: Demon Girls Night Out

Loona goes out on a girl's night out, Moxxie hangs out with his new friend, and Octavia's family goes on a little family outing

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Loona has yet to even meet Barbie Wire in Helluva Boss, but here she's known her aunt for years after meeting her by accident.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: Cray's cousin Jonathan to Loona, as he shares some interests with her but tries too hard to impress her and stares at her for long periods of time.
  • Berserk Button: Due to being forcibly injected in the past, Loona goes nuts at the sight of a needle.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Octavia, Cray, and Stolas all shout one when Stella announces that she talked with Flauros and Ixchel and arranged a date between their children.
  • The Bus Came Back: Husk and McScream return since their cameos in "Friends in Lower Places", with Husk being one of DJ's friends and McScream being thrown out of the Binger.
  • The Cameo:
    • McScream is shown getting thrown out of the club Verosika takes the girls (and Blitz) to.
    • Among the golfers is Scar.
  • Continuity Cameo: The flashback of Loona first meeting Barbie includes Lars and Harvey helping Loona sneak in.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • A Day in the Limelight: All three plots allow different characters focus.
    • Loona's plot gives her aunt Barbie a chance to see and spend time with both her and Verosika.
    • Moxxie's plot has him hanging out with Mick after work, which results in him meeting Ace's wife and Ryan's mom, Honey-Ryder.
    • Via's plot leads to her further bonding with Cray while meeting his cousin Jonathan.
  • Forced Transformation: After being insulted by Cordelia about his hands, Jonathan turns her into a platypus as she's walking away from him. She falis to notice even with the other students in the hallway staring at her.
  • Foreshadowing: Any long-time Luz Clawthorne readers would instantly recognize Casey as Whiskers just from seeing he's a cat with black fur. Sure enough, the ending confirms it's him.
  • The Ghost: Nina Fangs is brought up by Casey/Whiskers after his Catapult Nightmare.
  • Iron Butt Monkey: Throughout the golf match, Edgar is shown repeatedly being injured by the courses' hazards. Jonathan simply says he's survived worse.
  • Knight Templar Parent: Blitz intrudes on Loona's night out with Verosika, Bella, and Clara by convincing Gaap to let him serve as Verosika's bodyguard. He does his job but can't resist complaining at various points, and it doesn't get better when he finds out Barbie was joining the girls and being pursued by robots trying to bring her back to the rehab center. After they get home, Blitz tells Loona that he did what he did because he was afraid of Loona moving out and going to live with Verosika, a fear she puts in the grave.
  • Luminescent Blush: Linda has one after realizing she confessed to thinking Chel is hot.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • While praising Blitz for letting go and allowing Loona to live her life without doing something creepy like following her and her friends during her girls' night out, Moxxie indirectly inspires his boss to do just that.
    • Barbie broke out of rehab so she could spend time with Loona and Verosika. As a result, the robot guards that come after her come close to nearly killing her brother and niece forcing her to go back willingly.
  • Once More, with Clarity: We're given a glimpse of Sonya dissecting Casey from a memory taken from his P.O.V..
  • One-Steve Limit:
    • Jonathan, a Goetian cat demon with human hands, shares his name with Jonathan Long, human-turned-werewolf.
    • Janna, a cheetah hellcat who works at the Silvermoon Palace, shares her name with the human Janna Ordonia.
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: This is why Blitz forced himself into Loona's girl's night out; he feared that she'd leave him like everyone else he was close to and move in with Verosika. Loona tells him she won't do that as he raised her and will always be a part of her life.
  • Point of Divergence: Blitz bumps into Barbie Wire before she officially gets out of rehab.
  • Pool Scene: After the golf match, the Goetians relax in Flauros' outdoor swimming pool for a bit.
  • The Reveal:
    • Mick's mom died a year before he did, and he was seventeen. It's been nine years since then, making him twenty-six.
    • Loona snuck into Verosika's rehab center to visit her, where she ended up meeting Barbie and learned she was her aunt. Afterward, Blitz would allow Loona to visit Barbie so she could spend time with her.
    • Casey's soul has ended up in Hell, and now he goes by the name of Whiskers.
  • Sequel Hook:
    • Because of Stella, Octavia and Cray are now expected to go on a date.
    • Barbie's back in rehab, so who knows how things will go for her given the amped up security and other changes from the new management.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Bella is shown having to take heavy luggage up to a guest's room and when she succeeds, the guest decides to check out and Bella throws the suitcase out the window. The whole scene plays out like The Amazing World of Gumball episode, "The Kiss".
    • Ms. Deagle tells Moxxie that she's watching him... always watching.
    • To The Aristocats; Edgar is shown to be a sinner, working as the butler of Cray's family. And at one point, DJ and his friends sing "Everybody Wants to be a Cat".
  • Stating the Simple Solution: After hearing about how Edgar died, Linda points out that cats don't actually have nine lives and can't spend money, so he would've been allowed to manage Madame Adelaide's fortune while only spending a small amount to take care of Duchess and her kittens; heck, he could've even hired another butler to care for them. This causes Edgar to see that in trying to get rid of his boss's cats, he indignantly died a broke man.
  • Two Lines, No Waiting: While Loona is having a night out with Bella, Clara, and Verosika (with Blitz accompanying them), Moxxie hangs out with Mick, and Via's family goes on a family outing.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: When Stolas tells Stella she needs to wear appropriate golf clothing, she's appalled with having to wear shorts for the afternoon.
