"Papiliodia" provides examples of:
- Asleep in Class: Akko nods off during a class in magic numerology. Sucy exploits this by turning part of her hair into a plant.
- Dish Dash: Ursula does this with a stack of books after stumbling and sending them flying into the air. She manages to catch them for a split second before eventually falling (and sending the books crashing down with her).
- Establishing Character Moment: Similar to the first short film, the first major scene with Diana has her answering a sentence in a langauge nobody had spoken in years, immediately establishing her as The Ace.
- Living Statue: Diana uses an advanced spell to trigger one of these. It towers over and reaches toward a terrified Akko — just to pull out her Plant Hair.
- Mistaken for Disease: At first, Diana assumes the Pappiliodya pupae are parasites responsible for the Jennifer Memorial Tree’s destitute state. She uses the murowa spell on several of the pupae before Akko intervenes.
- MockGuffin: Discussed; Diana and her friends initially view the Shiny Rod as one of these.Diana: [after taking a closer look] An obvious imitation.
Akko: It’s the real deal!
Barbara: Did you bring your toy for show and tell?
Hannah: Did you spend your allowance on it? - Mythology Gag: Two of Akko's chariot cards feature the Red Briton Dragon from the first film and the Giant from Little Witch Academia: The Enchanted Parade.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Diana had this reaction after she accidentally shot Akko with the murowa spell.
- Plant Hair: Sucy takes advantage of a sleeping Akko by turning part of her hair into this. It sticks around for a few scenes before one of Diana’s spells removes it.
- Stealing the Credit: Played With, as it wasn't intentional, but despite Akko being the one to free the Pappiliodya, it was Diana that took the credit for it by Finnelan and Holbrooke as well as Hannah and Barbara, despite Diana's ill-fated attempt to explain that she didn't do it.
- Taking the Bullet: In an attempt to protect the rest of the Pappiliodya from Diana's murowa spell, Akko ends up taking the blunt of the spell, paralyzing her in the process. She gets better by the end though.
