Recap / Little Princess S 2 E 14 I Want To Be Tall

Go To

The episode begins with the Princess jumping up and down near an apple tree. The narrator thinks she's picking apples, but she explains that she's actually trying to reach her stuck space hopper, which she calls "Bouncy Thing". The Maid calls the Princess in for dinner.

Anticipating mashed potato with ketchup, she excitedly runs in to find the Admiral, General, and Prime Minister arguing over who gets to count in a game of hide and seek. They're standing in her way, and don't notice her until she shouts, "Excuse me!".

She runs into the kitchen, opens the door, and tries to reach the ketchup but can't. When the Chef claims that the mashed potatoes will make her grow big and tall, the Princess eats the entire plate, leaving none for her parents. This makes her feel sick, and when she goes to measure herself, she's no taller than before. The pets then measure themselves, which leads to one-upmanship between them.

The Maid is watering a houseplant, and the Princess asks why she is "washing" it. The Maid explains that she is not, and that plants need water to grow, which inspires the Princess to sit in her wading pool to try to make herself taller. It doesn't work, though.

She goes outside and complains that the Gardener's pumpkin is her size (it isn't, but she thinks it is). He explains that the compost makes his plants grow, so she stands onto the compost heap and sinks in. She asks the narrator what it's made of, and he replies that it's made of "old potato peelings, slimy cabbage leaves, smelly eggshells, maggot-y apple cores, mouldy leaves, and poo", grossing her out. The compost doesn't work either.

The narrator says, "No cheating", but that only makes her want to cheat. She lowers the height chart, measures herself again, and boasts about her apparent height. However, the King sees that the chart is lower than usual. She looks out the window and sees the pets on the slide, giving her an idea.

The Princess goes outside, climbs the slide, and has Scruff pull it to the apple tree, allowing her to take Bouncy Thing down. She then decides to stay on top of the slide so she can remain "tall" and helps the Admiral find the hiding General and Prime Minister, puts the apples in the Chef's basket, and plays with Gilbert.

The Princess's aunt and baby cousin then come over to visit and the Maid has the Princess watch the baby. He tries to climb onto Bouncy Thing but can't, making the Princess realise that she's at least tall enough to do that, and they ride on the space hopper together.

This episode provides examples of

  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: Downplayed for the list of the compost's ingredients. The list ends on poo, which is grosser than the rest of the ingredients, which were all expired food, but expired food is still pretty gross.
  • Buffy Speak: The narrator cites "maggot-y" apple cores as an ingredient of compost.
  • Companion Cube: The Princess calls Bouncy Thing a "him" and thinks "he" can get hungry.
  • Counting to Potato: The Admiral counts, "One, two, octopus, five, eight, squid...." and then "twenty-six, twenty-nine, one hundred".
  • Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: When the Princess pretends she's grown taller, she sings, "I'm a great big princess" to the tune of the theme.
  • Height Angst: The Princess spends most of this episode hating being short, as she can't reach things and doesn't always get noticed. It's right there in the episode title.
  • Informed Deformity: The Princess complains that sitting in her kiddie pool made her skin wrinkly, but she's drawn exactly the same.
  • Title Drop: After the compost fails at making the Princess grow, she whines, "I want to be tall!".
  • Toilet Humour: The compost is mentioned to have poo as an ingredient, and the Princess complains that it made her "smell like [her] potty".
