Recap / Little Princess S1 E8 - "I Don't Want a Bath"

Go To

It's evening, and the Maid is calling for the Princess, who is in her closet with the pets. The narrator asks why she is hiding, and the Princess replies that it's bath time. The narrator asks, "Don't you like baths?", and the Princess is about to reply when the Maid enters. She searches, but the Princess stays quiet, so she can't find her.

The Maid asks the King and Queen if they have seen the Princess and they say no, but the Queen suggests asking the General. He hasn't seen her either (and tells her to be quiet as he's pretending Nessie is asleep), so she goes to ask the Admiral, who uses his telescope to find her at the window.

As the Maid gets the Princess's bath ready, the Princess points out that she bathed the previous day, but the Maid shows her in the mirror that her face and elbow are dirty. The Princess tries to lie that the water is too hot or cold, but the Maid has already checked it. The Princess claims she wants to bathe on her own, but she only pretends to take a bath.

She almost gets away with this, but at bedtime, the Maid notices the dirt on the Princess when she reaches for Gilbert. The Maid takes her into the bathroom again, and the Princess pretends to be in pain, sending the King and Queen there. After a bit of back-and-forth, the Princess gets to settle for washing the dirt off at the sink.

The Princess gets put to bed, and the narrator asks if she's scared of baths. She replies that she isn't; she just hates the water going into her eyes and nose.

The next morning, she tries to stay clean by putting on an apron, Wellington boots, and later some oven mitts. Even with these garments, when the Chef suggests she help ice a cake he presumably baked, she turns it down on account of it being too messy. She rides her trike outside and the Prime Minister asks her to join him in "off-roading" but she says no because one of the places he wants to ride through is muddy.

She paints instead, but unfortunately gets paint on her face. At bath time, she goes outside to retrieve Gilbert and sees the Admiral larking about with a diver's mask on. Scruff jumps into the water, and the Princess tells him not to splash her as it stings her eyes. The Admiral says that it doesn't sting his, and he lets her borrow his diving mask. With the mask on, the Princess has such a great time in the bath that she doesn't let the adults take their baths.

This episode provides examples of

  • Baths Are Fun: The Princess has a great time in the bath once she avoids getting the water in her eyes and nose by wearing the diving mask.
  • Big "NO!": The Princess whines, "Noooo!" when she gets lowered into the bathtub.
  • Blatant Lies: The Princess is in her closet and says, "Move over, Puss!". The narrator asks if it was her who spoke and she says no.
  • Cats Hate Water: Puss hates getting splashed from the bathtub and the pond, and he seems nervous when the Maid tries to bathe the Princess, even though she's not bathing him.
  • Eye Scream: Downplayed; the bathwater stinging the Princess's eyes is the main reason why she doesn't want a bath.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: At the end, Puss puts on a raincoat and a rain hat, but no pants.
  • Hates Baths: The Princess seems to hate baths because she's desperately trying to avoid taking one, but it turns out that she just dislikes the water getting in her eyes and nose.
  • Last-Second Joke Problem: The episode ends with the Princess no longer hating baths... but unfortunately, she now won't get out of the bath.
  • Nasal Trauma: Downplayed; the Princess hates bathwater getting up her nose.
  • Prank Injuries: The Princess yells that she's hurting to try to get out of taking a bath.
  • Signature Laugh: Referenced when the Princess is pretending to be the Admiral in the bath. She tries to impersonate his iconic chuckle but sounds more like a sheep bleating.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Discussed when the narrator wonders if the Princess's aversion to taking a bath is because she's afraid of them. She isn't, though.
