Recap / Little Princess S 1 E 22 Maids Day Off

Go To

The episode starts in the morning, and the Maid is heading off somewhere. The Princess is sleeping in, so the narrator wakes her up. It turns out she overslept unintentionally, and she meets the King in the hallway. She asks him where the Maid is, and he reminds her that it's her day off.

They go into the living room, and as it turns out, he and the Queen overslept as well. The Princess tries to take over the Maid's role, but she accidentally throws the tablecloth over the Queen's face, hands them mugs that are different sizes, spills the cereal and milk, and spoons excessive jam onto everyone's cereal. The Princess then decides she wants to be maid for the whole day, but the Queen is dubious and suggests she only tidy her own room, at least for the time being.

While the Princess searches for an apron to put on, the Maid lounges outside and eats grapes. The Princess puts on an apron and head cloth, then prepares to tidy her room but gets distracted when she sees the pets covered in jam, milk, and cereal from a failed attempt at stealing the Princess's unfinished breakfast.

The Princess bathes Scruff, then she tries to bathe Puss, but he runs away and she leaves the taps running. She literally bumps into the Queen, who tells her that bathing Puss can wait for later, then asks if she needs help tidying her room. The Princess declines, then goes back to her bedroom, trying to make her bed but gets distracted when Scruff (who jumped out of the bath when he realised the taps were running) pulls on the blanket.

She tries again to find and bathe Puss, meanwhile the Maid has fallen asleep and animals are eating her food. During her search for Puss, the Princess wanders into the King's office and tries to tidy his desk. She finds Puss in a draw and takes him to be bathed, but unfortunately, the King's tea spills on his documents and an ink pot gets knocked over.

The Princess notices the bathwater overflowing and pouring downstairs, and screams. Puss, startled by the scream, wriggles out of her arms, and she hurries to find something to mop up the water, settling on some clothes in the laundry room. They don't work, however, so the narrator suggests getting assistance. The Princess declines, and decides to use her potty to scoop it up and put it in some wellies nearby.

The General and Prime Minister show up, so the Princess enlists them to help her clean up the water. It's also revealed that the wellies belong to the Prime Minister.

Some time later, they're still trying to clean it up, along with the Admiral, and they're shouting, which wakes up the Maid. The King and Queen notice the mess, then the Maid returns, but the Princess accidentally drenches her with water. She asks what's happening, and the others explain that the Princess was subbing for the Maid but there was a "crisis". The Maid correctly guesses that a tap has been left running, then goes upstairs and turns the taps off.

The Maid and Princess then work up to clean the messes, then we cut to bedtime when the Princess says that being maid is hard work, and, while a lot of fun, she won't be maid next time she has a day off.

This episode provides examples of

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Puss wears a rain hat when he's helping clean up the water.
  • Ambiguous Situation: When Scruff pulls on the blanket, it's left unclear as to whether he's trying to alert the Princess to the running bath taps, or if he was indeed just playing like she thought.
  • Artistic License – Biology: Puss happily licks jam off himself. While cats likely would lick jam off themselves if they got it on them, they wouldn't find it particularly enjoyable, since cats don't taste sweetness.
  • Buffy Speak: The Princess says to herself that she needs a mop or something "moppy" quickly, in order to sort out the bathwater situation.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: The Princess, when she's making her and her parents' cereal, says to herself, "Put on some jam, and some jam, and some jam, and jam."
  • Dramatic Irony: We get to see the Princess leaving the taps running, but she doesn't notice, so she doesn't know why water is flowing downstairs.
  • Go-to-Sleep Ending: The episode ends with the Princess going to bed.
  • Hates Baths: Puss runs away when the Princess tries to give him a bath. Perhaps this is because he's a cat.
  • I'm a Doctor, Not a Placeholder: The Chef tells the Queen, who was apologising for oversleeping, "I am the Chef, not the Maid!".
  • Pass the Popcorn: Puss eats popcorn while watching Scruff being bathed, because he finds it funny. It's not one of the "callous character watches a fight" examples, though.
  • Questioning Title?: The episode title is in the form of a question. The answer is "yes, it is indeed the Maid's day off".
  • Talking in Your Sleep: Comic example; the Maid sleep-talks about needing to hang something on the line.
