Season 1, Episode 6: The Antichrist's Monster

Tropes That Appear In This Episode:

  • Been There, Shaped History: Satan was directly involved in at least two Greek legends. He mesmerized King Midas into only perceiving that he had the golden touch. He empowered Charybdis in an attempt to indirectly take out the Greek gods, only for it to backfire and mutate her into the famous whirlpool monster she's known as.
  • Downer Ending: The episode ends with Bennigan being upset with Chrissy for turning him into a monster and exposing his body dysmorphia to the whole town. And despite her best efforts, he still looks at himself as a monster.
  • Giver of Lame Names: The names Satan gives to his spells like Mind Mess-Em-Ups and Matter Moves-Aroundsys, leave a lot to be desired.
  • I Have This Friend: Except in this case there really is a friend; Chrissy attempts to explain to Laura about Bennigan's self-esteem issues by using this trope. It ends up causing Laura (and eventually Snake-With-Arms and Satan; see Strange Minds Think Alike below) to think that Chrissy is actually talking about masturbation.
  • "King Kong" Climb: Bennigan suffering from Body Horror climbs a mini-golf version of the Empire State Building with Chrissy in one of his arms.
  • The Man in the Mirror Talks Back: Bennigan's body dysmorphia presents itself as his reflection viciously taunting him with his weight issues. It's so bad that he often responds to it out loud.
  • Multiple Head Case: As Bennigan's mutation worsens, he grows a head that manifests and voices his deeply negative self image.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • Satan apparently had a bargain with David Bowie that he had "ch-ch-changed."
    • Apparently toxic waste has been dumped into the town's reservoir at least once, Bennigan assuming that his Through the Eyes of Madness perspective is the result of this happening again.
  • Our Souls Are Different: Apparently Satan had the soul of his and Laura's regular mortal dog Bark Woofalo transferred to an immortal Hellhound body, but dog souls are "too pure" to live in a corporeal body past their expected date. They take Bark Woofalo to a Species-Specific Afterlife meant for dogs so that his soul could disperse and become one with all of dog-kind.
  • Pet the Dog: Literally. We see a more sensitive side of Satan when he's genuinely sad about his dog dying, even calling Laura so that he doesn't have to be alone with his grief. The episode ends with him longingly staring at an old photo of Laura and Bark on the day they got him, showing Even Evil Has Loved Ones.
  • Self-Deprecation: As a symptom of his body dysmorphia, Bennigan paints a self portrait that depicts him as far more overweight than he actually is.
  • Species-Specific Afterlife: The Isle of Wepwawet is basically "Dog Heaven"; an arcadia where all dog souls come from. Should a dog soul be there at the moment of death, their souls gets recycled into new dog souls on the corporeal plane.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Laura, Snake-With-Arms and Satan all think that Chrissy wanting to help Bennigan with his self-esteem is a euphemism for masturbation.
  • Successful Sibling Syndrome: Part of Bennigan's Weight Woe is because his older brother is much more physically fit.
  • Super-Empowering: Chrissy discovers a spell from her father's journals that allows her to give Bennigan a strongly muscled body. She stopped reading too soon to learn this spell is unstable on mortal bodies, and eventually mutates them into a Charybdis-like monster.
  • Through the Eyes of Madness: The "Mind Messim' Ups" spell Chrissy puts Bennigan under causes him to see the "beauty in everything". This translates him to seeing everything around him as a Sugar Bowl. Random people (and some rats) are made to look like Santa Claus, bugs look like fairies, cafeteria food looks like hearts and smiley faces and everything has a pink filter. Unfortunately, this has a side-effect of amplifying his dysmorphia, Bennigan's Weight Woe manifests as a far more bulbous and hostile reflection mocking him.
  • Vacuum Mouth: A side effect of the satanic transformation spell Chrissy used on Bennigan causes him to mutate into a monster with a giant mouth in his torso that sucks in everything around him. The previous victim of this was Charybdis, the legendary whirlpool monster.
  • Very Special Episode: The A Plot focuses on Chrissy discovering that Bennigan is very self-conscious about his weight and regularly engages in purging behavior. Her attempts to help him, only make him feel worse about himself and he refuses to talk to her afterwards. The episode closes out with a message for the National Eating Disorders Hotline.
